Authorities quickly sealed off Westfield Bondi Junction Shopping Centre. Police are also urgently gathering information and investigating the incident.
According to initial information, the 40-year-old suspect lives nearly 20km from the crime scene and carried out the attack independently.
In a statement the same day, Prime Minister Albanese described the Sydney shopping centre attack as a horrific act of violence targeting innocent people on an ordinary Saturday.
The leader also praised the policewoman who confronted and took down the attacker. According to New South Wales Police Assistant Commissioner Anthony Cooke, the attacker raised a knife at the officer and she opened fire.
