Endoscopy to remove toothpick and insert it into the antrum of a female patient

Accordingly, the patient, Mrs. H. (residing in Ward Thang Nhi, Vung Tau City) was admitted to Vung Tau Hospital for emergency treatment in a state of severe abdominal pain.

The patient’s family said that on the evening of February 22, Ms. H. went to a restaurant in Vung Tau City with her family. While eating grilled beef with betel leaves, Ms. H. swallowed a toothpick that was embedded in the dish.

At 5am on February 23, Ms. H. had severe abdominal pain and was taken to Vung Tau Hospital by her family for emergency treatment. Through examination and endoscopy, doctors discovered a foreign object resembling a toothpick, about 3cm long, lodged in the patient's antrum.

"This is a rather complicated case of a foreign object because it has lodged itself in the stomach wall. The process of removing it through the stomach can easily cause damage to the stomach and esophagus, especially the risk of esophageal perforation," a doctor at Vung Tau Hospital assessed.

The medical team at Vung Tau Hospital quickly performed an endoscopy and successfully removed the foreign object, a toothpick, without causing any complications for the patient.
