The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health said that early in the morning of September 8, Dr. Nguyen Ta Quyet - Head of the Hepatobiliary Department of Binh Dan Hospital - flew to Con Dao to support the treatment of a serious patient who had just been admitted to the Con Dao Military-Civilian Medical Center the day before.
According to a quick report by Dr. Ly Bao Duy - a specialist in surgery at Binh Dan Hospital - who is on a first rotation in Con Dao, a 17-year-old male student was just taken to the emergency room in a very serious condition after falling due to a traffic accident.
The patient was hit from behind by a car, then fell 4 meters forward, and was taken by his family to Con Dao Military Medical Center for emergency treatment.
Bedside ultrasound results showed left kidney injury, small to moderate amount of abdominal fluid localized in the hypogastric region, MSCT scan showed grade IV left kidney injury with perirenal fluid and blood collection (T), grade III spleen injury, pancreatic tail contusion, free fluid in the abdomen thought to be bloody fluid.
The patient was transfused with 1 unit of packed red blood cells and 4 units of plasma. The patient is currently stable and continues to be monitored and intensively cared for.
The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health highly appreciated the decision of the director of Binh Dan Hospital to send more good specialist doctors to Con Dao to increase the number of consultants, consultations and care for patients with serious injuries instead of transferring them to the hospital.
This is the safest option for patients with closed abdominal trauma. Moreover, Con Dao Medical Center currently has enough treatment facilities, especially the operating room and blood bank that have just been deployed by city hospitals for Con Dao.

Previously, on September 6, Associate Professor Tran Vinh Hung - Director of Binh Dan Hospital - had a remote consultation with special doctors in Con Dao and general emergency surgeons at the hospital to perform an emergency laparoscopic appendectomy for a fisherman. This was also the first case of successful laparoscopic surgery in Con Dao.
Associate Professor Tran Vinh Hung said that after receiving the task of developing expertise for the Con Dao Military-Civilian Medical Center, the hospital consulted the Department of Health and the locality to equip a modern operating room system from the laparoscopic system, CO2 gas and standard surgical instruments to the anesthesia and recovery system.
In addition, the hospital sent two doctors with experience in general surgery and anesthesia to work on-site. With the above resources, the hospital's board of directors and the on-site team of doctors decided that applying laparoscopic appendectomy technique to the patient was completely feasible.
Binh Dan Hospital quickly requested direction and received approval from Associate Professor Tang Chi Thuong, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, to perform this first endoscopic surgery.
