Why is the role of school psychological counseling so important? In the process of growing up, children may have physical and mental injuries. That injury can come from family, school or society.
Physical injuries are treated by doctors at the hospital. Severe mental injuries are also treated at some specialized hospitals. But what about mild mental injuries, which are quite a lot?
School psychology consultation at Marie Curie School is available through group activities.
Students from 11 years old and up, puberty, psychology in a period of change. If the living environment (family, school...) has negative impacts, they are hurt, psychology will develop complicatedly, unpredictably.
According to UNESCO, education has four pillars: "Learning to live together; learning to know; learning to do and learning to be". Schools do not only teach words but also teach people. Faced with the mental trauma of students, schools have the responsibility to heal those wounds.
Up to now, homeroom teachers have had to do a lot of work, including psychological counseling for their students. Sometimes it was successful, but many times it failed.
In my work as a school administrator, I have been very concerned about psychological counseling for students. If this is done well, it can have many positive effects on educating students’ character and preventing school violence.
Why do we need "3C"?
In 2018, Marie Curie School ( Hanoi ) established a school psychology consulting room at My Dinh campus, with a regular working team of 5 officers and employees; a 50 m2 office, fully equipped with necessary equipment; and is funded for operations according to the school year.
In 2022, the school will establish an additional school psychology counseling room at the new Van Phu campus, with a similar scale to the My Dinh campus.
The school's school psychology counseling room is organized and operated according to the 3C principle, which stands for "specialization - professionalism - expertise".
Expertise: requires staff to be trained in psychology in general and educational psychology in particular. In addition to professional knowledge, consultants need to meet soft skills such as: listening skills, observation skills, leadership skills, teamwork skills, public speaking skills, memory skills, etc.
At the same time, it is necessary to have emotional mastery techniques, time management and problem development skills, to be able to correctly identify students' problems.
Professional: the activities of the department from prevention activities (minimizing mental health risks that may affect students) to consultation activities are assigned appropriately and clearly identified subjects in the support process. All consultation members must ensure proper procedures and professional ethics. Consultation results are shown on researched, developed and completed forms.
Full-time: is a person recruited to undertake regular work, only doing and only being responsible for the assigned scope of work.
After nearly 5 years of operation, my school has supported thousands of students and parents, with tens of thousands of consultations (on average, 1 student/parent needs support 5 times when facing psychological difficulties). Most students with psychological difficulties proactively seek out the consultation room. This proves that students and parents have great trust in the consultation of psychological experts.
The most obvious results of school psychological counseling are: in the past 5 years, "incidents" among students have decreased significantly, almost eliminated; a friendly environment has been created; students enjoy going to school more; everyone feels happy.
