Rescue baby boy with ruptured appendix in critical condition

A 4-year-old boy with a ruptured appendix was in critical condition and was successfully operated on by doctors in Bac Lieu.

On September 9, news from Thanh Vu Medic Bac Lieu General Hospital said that the hospital's doctors had just successfully performed laparoscopic surgery on a 4-year-old boy with a ruptured appendix, which was life-threatening.

The doctor performed laparoscopic appendectomy for baby LQA.

The patient is LQA (4 years old, residing in Gia Rai Town, Bac Lieu). Baby A. was admitted to the hospital with severe abdominal pain for 3 consecutive days, accompanied by fatigue, lethargy, rapid pulse and high blood pressure. The family said that the baby had symptoms of right abdominal pain, which did not improve despite taking medication at home.

After examination and paraclinical tests, the doctor diagnosed the baby with peritonitis localized in the right hip area due to a ruptured appendix located behind the cecum, reaching the area under the liver.

With severe inflammation and the risk of spreading, baby A. was assigned to emergency laparoscopic surgery to remove the appendix immediately. The surgery lasted nearly 120 minutes. The medical team thoroughly treated the ruptured appendix and cleaned the inflammation, preventing the risk of spreading infection. After surgery, the baby's health recovered well and is expected to be discharged in the next few days.

According to Dr. Nguyen Huu Du, Deputy Head of the Department of Surgery - Thanh Vu Medic Bac Lieu General Hospital, appendicitis in children is very difficult to diagnose, because children often cannot describe their symptoms accurately, leading to late examination and detection.

"Appendicitis can cause serious complications such as peritonitis if not treated promptly. Therefore, parents should take their children to see a doctor immediately when they have signs of abdominal pain or unusual symptoms; pay attention to the health of their children, especially when they have symptoms of abdominal pain and the cause is unknown. Early examination will help detect and perform timely surgery, avoiding dangerous complications later on," Dr. Nguyen Huu Du added.
