2016 Nobel Prize in Physics comes to Vietnam to teach quantum topological materials

On June 30, at the International Center for Interdisciplinary Science and Education (ICISE, Gia Lai province), the Vietnam Rencontres du Vietnam in collaboration with the Asia-Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics (APCTP) introduced and opened a scientific event with the theme "Advanced School on Quantum Topological Materials" with the participation of 40 young scientists and researchers from 10 countries around the world.

In addition, the event also invited Professor Dam Thanh Son (University of Chicago, USA; Dirac Medal 2018 winner); Professor Yoshimasa Hidaka (Kyoto University, Japan; 2025 Elementary Particle Physics Medal); Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Tuan Hung (Tohoku University, Japan); Associate Professor Dr. Bo Yang (Nanyang Technological University, Singapore); Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Xuan Dung (Institute for Basic Sciences - IBS, Korea) and Associate Professor Dr. Zi-Yang Meng (University of Hong Kong)...

According to Professor Tran Thanh Van, President of the Vietnam Science Association, “Advanced School of Quantum Topological Materials” aims to convey and introduce young scientists and students to the new field of science. This is a “school” that aims to provide a comprehensive academic foundation for students on new directions and research paths of quantum topological systems – a field of research that combines topology (a branch of mathematics) with quantum mechanics.

Professor Tran Thanh Van shared that in recent years, quantum topological materials have emerged as a potential interdisciplinary field, connecting theoretical physics, solid state physics, materials science and especially quantum computing. With the ability to create stable and non-classical quantum states, topological materials are expected to play a key role in technological breakthroughs of the 21st century.

The main contents of the “summer school” include: topological band theory; quantum topological matter; approaches in quantum field theory; general symmetry; artificial intelligence…

Dr. Tran Thanh Son, Deputy Director of ICISE Center, said that Prof. Duncan Haldane had come to ICISE in 2022 to attend the “Conference on Interactive Topological Quantum Electronics”. Here, he participated in the scientific torch lighting ceremony, a symbolic event of the International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development launched by UNESCO.

Professor Duncan is also a pioneer in the field of quantum topology physics, having won the Nobel Prize in Physics in this field. On this occasion, he will present speeches related to the field of quantum topology materials. In addition, he will have meetings, exchanges and scientific inspiration for young scientists and students in Vietnam and the Asian region.
