Hanoi flooded heavily, school had to ask army vehicles to "rescue" students

(Dan Tri) - Due to the influence of storm No. 10, Hanoi has been experiencing heavy rain since noon today (September 30). Many schools have notified parents to pick up their children at noon. Some places have planned to mobilize military vehicles to pick up students.

This afternoon, many schools sent out notices that students who do not eat lunch in the afternoon can "improvise" and either go to class or let their children stay home to ensure safety, but must report to the homeroom teacher.

Mr. D. Hung, a resident of the Ecohome1 apartment complex (Bac Tu Liem, Hanoi ) said that the residential group had just informed families that after school this afternoon, students would gather at the gate, and military vehicles would be available to take them home.

It is known that in the Ecohome1 apartment complex and some neighboring areas, students mainly study at Dong Ngac Primary and Secondary School. These are two schools located in low-lying areas, always deeply flooded when there is heavy rain.

At 11am, Ms. Nguyen Thi Mai Huong (Ha Dong, Hanoi) received a text message from the Foreign Language High School - where her son is in 10th grade - about the cancellation of the afternoon class. All students left school to go home and study online. For students who could not return home, the school supported them to study online at school.

However, Ms. Huong chose to take a taxi to pick up her child. At that time, the rain was heavier and Pham Van Dong Street was flooded in the entire area from the National University to My Dinh bus station.

Nearly 2 hours passed, Ms. Huong’s taxi could not move through this area. She had to get out of the car, walk to find a convenience store to take shelter from the rain and have lunch.

At Kim Giang Secondary School, Thanh Xuan, Hanoi, due to heavy rain, around 12 noon, the school gate was flooded up to the knee.

“This afternoon, you have two regular classes in class. However, I see that it is raining heavily and there is no sign of it stopping. Therefore, to keep the children safe, for students who go home at noon, parents should consider letting their children attend classes in the afternoon.

In case any student is absent in the afternoon, they can inform the homeroom teacher. For students who have returned home this afternoon, parents should inform the homeroom teacher about their current situation,” the message from the homeroom teacher of class 9A9, Kim Giang Secondary School, Hanoi this afternoon.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Ha (Cau Dien, Hanoi) also received a notice from Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School allowing students to take the entire afternoon shift off at 12:00.

“This morning, many students in my child’s class were absent due to the flood. However, because the school did not allow online learning, my child still rode his bike to school.

The flooding is now worse than this morning. The rain is still very heavy with thunder and lightning, so I told my child to stay at school and not move,” said Ms. Ha.

The school proactively teaches or takes time off.

Ms. Le Thi Hoa (To Huu Street, Hanoi) said that Olympia Inter-level School - where her child studies - has decided to let students go home earlier than usual. Instead of finishing school at 4:15, all students will leave at 1:30 pm if they take the bus and 1:45 pm if their parents pick them up in person.

Many parents reported to Dan Tri reporters that their children were allowed to take the afternoon off but were stuck at school due to heavy rain and flooding in front of the school gate. Meanwhile, parents were also stuck at work, unable to pick up their children because many roads home were heavily flooded.

“The heavy rain has been going on since last night. It continued to rain heavily this morning with thunder and lightning. I think the schools were too slow to react, leading to the students having to go home when the whole city was already flooded,” a parent lamented.

"The school takes the initiative to teach or take a break"

This afternoon, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training urgently sent out a notice to schools about how to respond to storm No. 10.

According to this department, schools proactively respond promptly, moving machinery and equipment if necessary.

For schools with boarding students, schools must coordinate with families to promptly grasp student information. Schools absolutely must not organize outdoor or extracurricular activities on rainy or stormy days.

Speaking to Dan Tri reporter, the Director of Hanoi Department of Education and Training said that schools can flexibly schedule classes or holidays to suit and ensure the safety of students.
