In January, coach Shin Tae Yong was unexpectedly fired by the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI), despite helping the national team compete successfully in the third qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup (having just won against Saudi Arabia not long before).

This is what makes coach Shin Tae Yong feel extremely resentful. Even after taking office at Ulsan HD Club, the Korean coach still cannot forget the feeling when receiving the dismissal notice from PSSI.
In a recent interview, coach Shin Tae Yong admitted: “I was really shocked. I didn’t expect that to happen. Suddenly, I received an email requesting to terminate my contract without prior notice.”
Coach Shin Tae Yong emphasized that he did not know why he was fired when he was doing a good job. PSSI even just gave him a new contract until 2027.
The coach born in 1971 shared that he had cut off contact with PSSI President, Erick Thohir. He added: “In the past, we often contacted each other via Instagram, Kakaotalk or WhatsApp. However, he and I have not talked for a long time.

I really don’t know why I had to stop. I have my own pride. Honestly, I never thought about stopping. If we had won against Australia in March, I believed Indonesia could have qualified for the World Cup. At that time, I was only focused on my goal and didn’t think about anything else.
I am grateful to Mr. Erick Thohir for his support in helping Indonesian football develop rapidly. I do not exclude the possibility of working with him in the future. Anyway, I would like to thank him. Indonesian football fans also give me a lot of love.”
