Special 'boarding' students of Kon Ktu village

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên29/09/2023

Every Monday morning, 42 students from Kon Ktu village bring their belongings to Dak Ruong Secondary School. In addition to their school bags, they also have to bring clothes and several kilos of rice, bamboo shoots, etc., enough for their 6-day stay at school.

According to Mr. Doan Van Thoai, Principal of Dak Ruong Secondary School, in 2020, the suspension bridge over the Dak Bla River connecting Kon Ktu village with the center of Dak Ruong commune was washed away by floodwaters. Since then, students in Kon Ktu village have been forced to take a detour of more than 14 km to get to school. At first, parents had to take their children to school every day, which was very difficult. Realizing that the long distance travel would affect the quality of study as well as the number of students, the school organized a parent meeting and proposed a plan for this group of students to eat and stay at school to facilitate their studies.

At the beginning of the week, students in Kon Ktu village bring rice and food to school.

Through the process of mobilization, the school has convinced all parents to send their children to live in the commune center and assigned parents to come and look after them every week. Because they have not prepared food and accommodation for the students, the school had to borrow facilities from the district's Continuing Education Center so that the students would have a place to stay in the beginning. A few months later, the district allocated a part of the school's budget to build a dormitory for the students. Since then, this group of students has been moved to live at the school, and parents do not have to come and look after their children anymore, but leave them all to the school to manage.

At first, when students stayed at school, parents contributed whatever they had. Seeing the students’ meager meals, the school’s teachers took a portion of their salaries to support the students. After that, the teachers posted the students’ meals on social media to call for support.

Knowing the situation, the "Nuoi em" project of the volunteer group Niem Tin sponsored meals for students in Kon Ktu village with a budget of 17,000 VND/day/child. From now on, the quality of the children's meals is guaranteed.

Teacher Dat guides students of Kon Ktur village in cooking

As the person directly managing and taking care of the group of boarding students in Kon Ktu village, Mr. Nguyen Van Dat (history teacher) said that at first, welcoming the students to eat and stay at the school faced many difficulties. Meanwhile, the students are ethnic minorities, not yet accustomed to the collective environment, and their daily activities as well as personal hygiene and hygiene in the place where they eat and live are not yet guaranteed. Teachers even had to spend money to buy toothbrushes, towels, soap, etc. for the students.
