After drinking soft drinks distributed for free at the school gate, many students of Binh Minh Secondary School (Thanh Oai, Hanoi ) showed signs of suspected poisoning such as stomachaches... and had to be hospitalized for treatment.

Thanh Oai District People's Committee said that it had previously received a report about a student of Binh Minh Secondary School being hospitalized.

According to the report, Binh Minh Secondary School currently has 1,037 students, the school does not organize meals for boarding. At about 1:20 p.m. on September 30, at the school gate, a group of strangers distributed free soft drinks to students. 263 students drank this product.

At 2:36 p.m. the same day, the first student to show symptoms of stomachache and nausea was NHH (class 6A). Afterwards, the school took her to the commune health station and transferred her to Thanh Oai District General Hospital.

At 10pm the same day, Thanh Oai General Hospital received 12 more children with the same symptoms of headache, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting from Binh Minh Secondary School. Here, these children were diagnosed and monitored for food poisoning.

As of 9am on October 1, 13 students (1 grade 6 student; 7 grade 7 students; 5 grade 8 students) are in stable health. It is expected that at 5pm this afternoon, they will be discharged from the hospital, no new cases have been detected.

The authorities of Thanh Oai district continue to clarify the incident and take samples of soft drinks for testing. A representative of the Department of Education and Training of Thanh Oai district also said that they have informed schools to strengthen coordination with parents, educate children not to eat snacks outside the school gate and absolutely not to accept food and drinks from strangers.

Speaking with VietNamNet, a representative of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training informed that the Department has warned the district, county, and town Education and Training Departments about the phenomenon of students getting stomach aches when using free drinking water distributed near school gates.

Hanoi Department of Education and Training requested units to strengthen propaganda to schools to inform students not to use products distributed or donated of unknown origin.
