On October 1, according to information from Gia Dinh People's Hospital, doctors from Gia Dinh People's Hospital coordinated with the team from Saigon General Hospital to successfully perform surgery to remove an 8cm uterine fibroid, type 3-5, from a young woman in the center of Ho Chi Minh City.
The surgery was not only safe and successful, but also preserved the patient's uterus, opening up the opportunity to have children in the future.
The patient is Ms. DTH, 32 years old, residing in Cau Ong Lanh ward, Ho Chi Minh City. During a routine health check-up at a private medical facility, Ms. H. was discovered to have a large uterine fibroid.
Worried about the risk of reproductive health problems, she went to Saigon General Hospital - where she registered for health insurance - for a check-up. Here, she was introduced to the Obstetrics Clinic of Gia Dinh People's Hospital, which has just been deployed as a satellite clinic since June 2025.
After ultrasound and MRI, doctors determined that Ms. H.'s fibroid was about 8cm in size, type 3-5 - the type that can easily cause menorrhagia, hypermenorrhea and is difficult to control with medication. With a high risk of complications, she was advised to have surgery to remove the fibroid.
After the surgery, the tumor was completely removed, the uterus was preserved, the patient did not lose much blood and recovered well. After 4 days, Ms. H. was discharged from the hospital in a stable condition.
Sharing after the surgery, Ms. H. emotionally said: "I thought I would have to be transferred to a higher level, maybe even have to have my uterus removed because the tumor was too big. But thanks to being introduced to a satellite clinic specializing in obstetrics, I was treated right at Saigon General Hospital.
From anxiety, I turned to hope and then burst into happiness when I learned that I had just passed the surgery and kept my uterus. As someone who still wants to have more children, that is extremely precious to me. I am grateful to the doctors for bringing confidence to patients like me."
Doctor CK2 Hua Thi Chi, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Gia Dinh People's Hospital, who directly performed the surgery, said: "With a large tumor, type 3-5, if not intervened promptly, the patient may suffer from menorrhagia, severe anemia, seriously affecting the ability to get pregnant. Luckily, Ms. H. is young, the uterus has only one tumor with clear boundaries, so we decided to remove the tumor and preserve the uterus."
Dr. Chi also emphasized the importance of regular gynecological examinations: "Uterine fibroids are benign, but many people have no symptoms until the tumor grows large, causing complications or compressing other organs. Women of all ages should have gynecological examinations 1-2 times/year to detect abnormalities early. Maintaining reproductive health is not only for yourself but also for the happiness of your family."
The implementation of a satellite obstetrics clinic at Saigon General Hospital is considered an important step forward, helping women living and working in the city center to more conveniently examine, screen and treat gynecological diseases. In particular, specialized techniques such as uterine fibroid removal, laparoscopic ovarian cyst surgery, hysterectomy, etc., can now be performed right at this facility.
