No more traffic jams

At each school gate, the image of youth union members, police, teachers and parents working together to maintain traffic safety has become a beautiful tradition. The model of “Traffic Safety School Gate” not only contributes to reducing traffic jams and accidents but also forms traffic culture awareness for future generations.

In Luu Kiem ward, the youth union members, along with the police and the Veterans Association, were present at the schools early in the morning. Each person had a job, from traffic control, to reminding, to propaganda. Thanks to that, even though there were many parents picking up and dropping off their children, the road in front of the school gate was still clear, without the jostling and honking of cars like before.

The model of "Traffic Safety School Gate" has the cooperation and support of forces such as youth union members, police, teachers, parents...

Mr. Dinh Van Thuc, Secretary of the Youth Union of Luu Kiem Ward, shared that maintaining the model of a safe traffic school gate helps limit traffic jams and reduce the risk of collisions in front of the school gate. More importantly, students gradually develop a sense of compliance with traffic laws from small things. This is not only a task of maintaining traffic order but also an environment for training skills and a sense of responsibility for local youth.

Not only Luu Kiem ward, many other localities in the city have implemented the model of "Safe Traffic School Gate" in a synchronous manner. Students are instructed to walk in rows, not to gather and play around, parents are reminded to stop and park in the right place, street vendors no longer have the opportunity to gather and cause congestion. These seemingly small changes have contributed to reducing congestion and collisions at the end of school hours.

At Tan Dan Primary School (Le Dai Hanh Ward), the school dismissal scene is now different. Parents’ motorbikes and electric bicycles are parked in straight rows. When the school bell rings, students file out, no longer running in a rush.

At many school gates at dismissal time, there is no longer any jostling or chaos, but instead parents' motorbikes and electric bicycles are parked in straight rows.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy, Head of the School Team, said: “From the beginning of the school year, we have maintained the Traffic Safety School Gate model by assigning teachers to directly guide students. Students are trained in the skills of driving in the correct lane, wearing helmets properly, and recognizing traffic signs. The good news is that students not only do it for themselves but also remind their parents. They become very effective young propagandists.”

Nguyen Minh Chau, a fourth grader, said: “I always remind my parents to wear a helmet when taking me to school. Teachers say that is the only way to be safe. My friends do the same, everyone knows to obey traffic laws to avoid being fined and to keep the whole family safe.”

Spreading the spirit of community responsibility

It is the spread from students that has created a positive effect. Many parents admit that thanks to their children's reminders, they have given up the habit of stopping their vehicles in the middle of the road or being lazy about wearing helmets. From a model of managing order in front of the school gate, "Traffic Safety School Gate" has become a life skills education class outside of class hours, forming traffic culture from a young age.

According to Deputy Secretary of Hai Phong City Youth Union Duong Thi Huong Giang, the model of “Traffic Safety School Gate” was launched by the Central Youth Union in 2012 and up to now, the whole city has effectively maintained more than 1,000 models. This is a testament to the consensus of schools, organizations, parents and students in building a safe school environment.

The red flag team at Ai Quoc Secondary School are traffic safety propagandists.

The youth volunteer teams and red flag teams not only direct traffic but also directly propagate and remind people to wear helmets, not to carry too many people, not to hold umbrellas while driving, and distribute communication handbooks on traffic safety. Many places even organize for students and parents to sign a commitment not to violate traffic laws.

Thanks to this, traffic congestion in front of the school gate has been significantly reduced, and the number of minor collisions during rush hour has also been significantly reduced. More importantly, the model has contributed to building traffic culture.

Mr. Nguyen Van Sang, whose child is in grade 9 in Thai Tan commune, said: “Before, I used to be very worried every time school ended because of the traffic jams, it was very dangerous for my child to go out on the street. But since the Youth Union and teachers have been directing traffic, everything is neater and safer. We, the parents, are very reassured.”

The model of "Safe Traffic School Gate" is not only a solution to prevent traffic jams, but also demonstrates community spirit, where youth union members play a pioneering role, police maintain order, and parents accompany the school.

At many school gates, there are painted lines to guide traffic flow.

Deputy Secretary of the Hai Phong City Youth Union Duong Thi Huong Giang emphasized that this is not only an activity to maintain order at the school gate but also a way for the young generation to learn how to live responsibly towards themselves and the community. A student who knows how to wear a helmet today will become a traffic-cultured citizen tomorrow.
