The durian hill in Village 1, Da Huoai 3 Commune has seriously collapsed, threatening 10 households living at the foot of the hill.

On the afternoon of August 13, leaders of Da Huoai 3 commune and local authorities surveyed and inspected the hill at high risk of landslides in Hamlet 1 (Da Huoai 2 commune).

Through inspection, local authorities and functional agencies showed that this hill is about 80m high, more than 2ha wide. Due to prolonged heavy rain, the hill was torn into a deep ditch running from the top of the hill to the area where many households are living.

Leaders of Da Huoai 3 commune were present to propagate and mobilize people to proactively evacuate from dangerous areas when there is heavy rain to prevent landslides and ensure safety of life.

On the hill, many places have been eroded, soil from the top has flowed down to the area below. The entire hillside has subsided, with cracks 0.5 to 1 meter deep, extending in many places. With this situation, the risk of landslides can occur at any time when heavy rain continues. Right below, 10 households with 34 people are living in a state of insecurity, worrying about the safety of their lives and property.

Mr. Dinh Huu Tinh, a resident living at the foot of the collapsing hill, worried: “During the rainy season of 2024, this hill had a landslide, but it was minor. However, last night, the rain was so heavy and prolonged that the hill behind our house was torn apart. All night long, all the residents here were afraid that the hill would collapse, so no one dared to sleep. We all know it is very dangerous, but our houses and assets are all here, so we don’t know what to do.”

Sharing the same concern, Mr. Dinh Thanh Ban said: “My family has 5 members, the house we saved up for many years has just been built. We know it is dangerous, but all our assets are here, so we just pray for peace to live and work. Now the whole family has to stay here and be prepared for heavy rains to proactively move to ensure safety. If we move now, the whole family will not know where to live.”

The dangerous landslide and subsidence point on the hill is less than 10 meters from a resident's house.

Through a field inspection, Mr. Nguyen Van Trinh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Da Huoai 3 Commune, said: The risk of the hill collapsing when heavy rain continues is very high. The local government has mobilized households to evacuate to ensure safety. However, it is currently no longer raining, so the households have proactively asked to stay and signed a commitment to voluntarily evacuate when heavy rain occurs. The local government determined that people's lives are always put first, so in the long term, the local government will work with households to find a plan to evacuate from the dangerous area.

According to Mr. Trinh, the People's Committee of Da Huoai 3 commune has also arranged a permanent force here to promptly warn and support people in all situations, especially when heavy rain occurs.
