Bridge of Love: Please help a family in extreme poverty

The humanitarian journey Sharing the pain, coordinated by Dong Nai Newspaper, Radio and Television and the Association for the Support of the Disabled - Orphans and Poor Patients of the province, recently visited the family of Mrs. Truong Thi Hong Hoang in An Luong village, Phuoc Binh ward, Dong Nai province. Everyone in the group felt heartbroken when witnessing the grandfather lying in bed due to a stroke, the grandmother exhausted from overwork and the two young grandchildren facing the risk of dropping out of school.

Quickly wiping away the tears rolling down her cheeks, Mrs. Hoang (68 years old) said that a few years ago, her family had enough to eat and had the means to help many unfortunate people around. Then, the family business failed, she had to sell all the land to pay off the debt. Her three sons had to go to industrial zones to work as workers. Until now, although they have started a family, their life is still precarious, having to live in a rented house.

The sadness was even heavier when Mrs. Hoang's youngest son, Nguyen Ngoc Dong (40 years old), was in trouble with the law. After returning from re-education, he also got married and had two children, Khanh Vy (12 years old) and Quoc Huy (8 years old). After only 5 years of happiness, Dong and his wife divorced, each went their separate ways, and the two young children had to be sent back to their grandparents to be raised and educated.

The disaster had not yet passed when illness struck again. Mrs. Hoang's husband, Mr. Nguyen Bon (70 years old), suffered a stroke and has been bedridden for 4 months now. All daily activities now depend entirely on his frail wife. Mrs. Hoang herself also has a serious heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cloudy eyes, and her health is deteriorating day by day.

“The torment of illness and the prolonged shortness of breath made me want to give up on my fate. But then I thought, if something happened to me… who would take care of my husband and where would the children go?” - Mrs. Hoang sadly said.

Hearing their grandmother say this, Vy and Huy both bowed their heads sadly, worried that when the new school year started, would they still be able to go to class?

“If I don’t have money, I will have to quit school. Just thinking about it makes me so sad and regretful. I long to go to school so that I can have a job in the future, take care of my grandparents and escape the poverty I have now…” Vy said, trying to hold back her tears.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Mai, Head of the Women's Association of An Luong Village, Phuoc Binh Ward, said that out of sympathy for Ms. Hoang and her two orphaned children, neighbors called for emergency support when Mr. Bon was in the emergency room. Education for the children and medicine for rehabilitation are large, long-term expenses that need to be shared by philanthropists near and far.

A small gift, a little rice, a few notebooks, a set of textbooks or a financial support at this time is a life buoy, a ray of hope for Mrs. Hoang’s family to overcome difficulties and hardships. And the future of the two children will be to continue going to school like many other friends of the same age…
