Kuwait's state television quoted a royal statement expressing grief over the death of King Nawaf al-Ahmad Al-Sabah.
Last November, King Nawaf was hospitalized due to heart problems. He was later reported to be in stable condition.
King Nawaf took over the small but wealthy kingdom of Kuwait, which has the world’s seventh-largest oil reserves, in late September 2020, as the government tried to boost the economy amid low oil prices and the complicated developments of the Covid-19 pandemic. At that time, he was the successor to the late King Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah, who had just passed away. Mr. Nawaf is the half-brother of the late King Sabah.
The late Sultan Sabah ruled Kuwait since 2006. He was hailed as the architect of Kuwait's foreign policy for more than 50 years, helping steer the Gulf state through decades of turmoil in the Middle East.
