That was the information given at the program "Clean City, Green Ocean" and the conference to evaluate the pilot implementation of green schools in Da Nang City, which was held on the afternoon of May 30.

Fear of garbage audit so less dumping

Mr. Dang Ngoc Lam - principal of Le Hong Phong Secondary School (Hai Chau District, Da Nang) - said that the school implements the Green School model with many activities such as replacing disposable products, equipping water filtration systems to get water into personal bottles, labeling classroom trash bins in accordance with the school's classification and treatment methods, auditing trash, monitoring the amount of trash generated in the school every month...

"The school conducts a garbage audit at least once a week. There are times when the amount of garbage is so great that the audit is quite difficult for students and teachers. After that, everyone reminds each other to limit littering so that the audits are conducted less often," said Mr. Lam.

Accordingly, the garbage audit includes steps such as collecting, recording and inventorying the total amount of garbage collected by individuals, classes and schools in 1 day and 1 week.

The volume of waste generated throughout the school will then be estimated based on the number and condition of the audited bins, and the percentage of waste generated will be estimated. The audit will help students understand where their waste comes from and how much of it is.

A student said: "From grade 1 to grade 5, I never brought food to school, but I was so surprised when I counted the amount of trash in a week and saw how much. When I heard that the amount of trash at the landfill was 100 times more than at school, I really didn't dare to litter anymore."

On the sidelines of the conference, some teachers said that when applying the garbage audit method, many students, who did not like touching garbage, gradually became excited about this activity and really did not expect that they threw away so much. Then, through having to count the garbage every day, they were afraid of touching the garbage, afraid that the amount of garbage produced in the class would increase, so they limited littering as much as possible.

More than 11 tons of garbage were classified and recycled.

The Green School model is organized by the Department of Natural Resources and Environment in coordination with the Department of Education and Training of Da Nang City and other organizations. After only 9 months of implementation in 20 schools in Da Nang, the model has collected, classified and recycled more than 11.7 tons of garbage; including 0.7 tons of plastic waste.

Schools have issued regulations on reducing plastic and classifying waste; invested in waste classification systems; launched campaigns to replace disposable plastic items in canteens; installed drinking water systems in schools and encouraged students and teachers to use personal water bottles; and limited printing when organizing events...

In addition, many green practice initiatives are regularly implemented by teachers and students, creating green habits in schools such as: composting, collecting milk cartons, collecting batteries, sorting trash in the classroom, using decorative boards instead of billboards and backdrops...
