The CNMC began investigating Apple in July 2024, targeting potential anti-competitive practices by the company. The initial focus was on allegations that Apple imposed unfair trade terms on developers selling products through its app store.

The CNMC said the investigation was expanding to examine whether Apple had set a mandatory price for developers to distribute their apps in its stores, which the agency said would constitute an anti-competitive practice.

Responding to the CNMC's decision, Apple said it would continue to work with the Spanish antitrust authority to ensure concerns were clarified. It also stressed that the App Store is designed to provide a safe and trustworthy experience for users and is a great business opportunity for developers in Spain and around the world .

Apple's success is based on a closed ecosystem around the iPhone and iPad, where it controls every aspect of the platform, which it says enhances security and user experience. However, this approach is causing conflicts with European competition regulations.
