Reaching out and supporting the people of Lau village in Western Nghe An after days of isolation due to floods

Lau Village (Tuong Duong Commune) is one of four villages completely isolated after the historic flood on July 22. After days of complete isolation, on the morning of July 26, relief teams were able to reach the village to support the local people.

According to the Tuong Duong commune government, 21 out of 26 villages and hamlets in the area were flooded and isolated, including 4 hamlets (Chan hamlet, Lau hamlet, Mac hamlet, Nhan hamlet) with 394 households and 1,597 people who could not be reached because the bridge was washed away. Ms. Kha Thi Lien - a resident of Lau village recounted: "That day it rained heavily, the water rose quickly, my husband and I did not have time to get things, we only had time to ask our neighbors to carry the rice to the stilt house to avoid flooding. But then the water rose high, flooded everything, there was nothing left in the house. All the soaked rice was now spoiled, we could only feed it to the chickens." Photo: Thanh Cuong

"My family is weak, and my husband has kidney stones. After the flood, my husband and I cleaned up a little bit every day, hoping that life would return to normal soon. Luckier than other families, Mr. Kha Van Hung's family (a resident of Lau village) had a boat, so when they saw the water rising, they were able to move some important items. "After that, the water rose quickly, we only had time to leave our belongings and run for our lives, so most of the household items such as the refrigerator and TV were broken," Mr. Hung shared. "For the past 4 days, the village has had a power outage. We villagers have no electricity for daily activities. Our phones have run out of battery so we cannot contact anyone.
