Faced with the situation of sea wave erosion, local authorities are trying to find long-term and sustainable solutions to prevent coastal sandbanks from being "erased", preserving the livelihoods of people around the area.

Previously, the beach at Tan Thanh block (Hoi An Tay ward) was a long stretch of sand, considered a famous tourist destination of Quang Nam province (old) on the domestic and international tourist map. Mr. Le Van Lam (Hoi An Tay ward) shared that the spacious, long stretch of sand around the coast has brought a great impression to tourists, especially foreign tourists. Thanks to that, the number of people visiting Hoi An Ancient Town to visit the local beach is increasing, the lives of people around the area have also benefited a lot.

However, since 2013, due to the impact of low pressure and heavy rains, storms have caused high waves to rise, "swallowing" hundreds of cubic meters of coastal sand, affecting many households and shops along the shore. Since the end of 2024, the wave encroachment has become more severe as large waves combined with strong winds have continuously encroached further inland.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tu - a tour guide from Hoi An, Da Nang expressed that this beach was very beautiful and long a few years ago. Now there is only a small strip of sand left. Normally, tourists really like the beach, but because of erosion, the length and gentleness of the beach is no longer there but very deep. The beach is no longer as beautiful as tourists expect, which is a disadvantage for the Hoi An tourism industry.

According to VNA reporters at the scene, many large waves continuously eroded deep into the mainland, forming a vertical cliff 4-5 meters high right next to residential areas and tourist businesses. The long landslides have destroyed the inherent beauty of the coastline, causing a decline in local sea tourism activities.

According to Mr. Nguyen Hoai Bao (resident of Tan Thanh block), the landslide situation has appeared many years ago, but now the severity has become much worse. The feeling of insecurity and anxiety is common among most of the people here. Local people expect that the authorities at all levels will soon come up with sustainable solutions such as building breakwaters to protect residential areas and the coast, helping people to stabilize their lives soon.

Faced with imminent danger, many hotel and restaurant businesses along the coast of Hoi An Tay ward have proactively planted bamboo stakes, piled sandbags, piled up earth and rocks, and erected barriers to minimize risks to residents and tourists. However, all reinforcement efforts could not prevent the fierce destruction of the waves.

The People's Committee of Hoi An Tay Ward has organized the installation of signs, warning ropes, and demarcation of dangerous areas in landslide areas and areas at risk of landslides on the coast. At the same time, it has notified residents and tourists not to enter these areas to ensure safety. At the same time, it has increased information and communication so that residents and tourists can clearly understand the developments and causes of landslides, proactively take measures to prevent and respond, and ensure the safety of people and property.

According to Mr. Le Minh Tuan (Head of the Economic - Infrastructure and Urban Department of Hoi An Tay Ward), the local government requested the investor to request the construction unit to focus on human resources and equipment, speed up the progress of the Project to prevent erosion and sustainably protect the Hoi An coast. The project includes underground dykes, welding groins and beach creation with a total investment of more than 982 billion VND with the aim of reducing sea waves, enhancing resilience to the impact of climate change, and effectively preventing serious erosion in recent years.

“In the immediate future, Hoi An Tay Ward will continue to urge units to pump sand into the C7 feeding ground with a length of 150m to protect the coast and prevent erosion. In the long term, Hoi An Tay Ward recommends that competent authorities study measures to protect the coast sustainably. Because this is an important coast for Hoi An Tay Ward in particular and Da Nang City in general in tourism development,” said Mr. Le Minh Tuan.
