Schools in Cao Bang focus on overcoming storm consequences

Early in the morning of October 2, Xuan Truong Primary Boarding School, Xuan Truong Commune ( Cao Bang ) was busy cleaning up. The work of overcoming the consequences of the storm had been carried out by dozens of people from the coordinated forces since the morning of October 1, but the amount of mud was too thick, many items were damaged and disturbed, so on October 2, many people continued to come to help the school.

Ms. Lanh Thi Nham, Principal of Xuan Truong Primary Boarding School, said: The school suffered heavy damage, deep flooding, and many assets such as amplifiers, speakers, photocopiers, pianos, etc., estimated to be worth nearly 250 million VND. The school is trying to clean up on October 2 to resume teaching and learning from October 3.

Ms. Trieu Thi Ngoc Thu, Chairwoman of the People's Committee of Xuan Truong Commune (Cao Bang) said: Xuan Truong Commune has 3 schools from kindergarten to junior high school damaged by the storm, of which Xuan Truong Primary Boarding School suffered the most damage.

Ms. Thu recounted: At about 1 p.m. on September 29, water flooded the school yard. At that time, the school had students. The local authorities coordinated with the school to notify parents to pick up students and move them to a safe place. At night, the flood was nearly 1 meter higher than the school yard. Local authorities were always on duty to protect the safety of students who were forced to stay at school.

At Hong Dai Primary and Secondary School, Be Van Dan Commune (Cao Bang), on the morning of October 2, students began to go to class. Hong Dai Primary and Secondary School also suffered heavy damage; water was 80cm deep compared to the school yard, 20m of fence collapsed, refrigerators and photocopiers were flooded... estimated damage of hundreds of millions of dong.

Mr. Phung Ngoc Vuong, Principal of Hong Dai Primary and Secondary School, Be Van Dan Commune (Cao Bang) shared: At 11pm on September 28, the water reached the yard, teachers rushed in to save belongings. But the water rose very quickly, the fence collapsed, a strong current flowed through the school, very dangerous, so teachers could not save heavy objects. By 9am on October 1, the water receded, the school was highly focused on cleanup work.

According to the Department of Education and Training of Cao Bang province, due to the impact of the storm causing heavy rain, localized flooding, landslides, many schools in the province were flooded, damaged property, and had to close. The whole province has over 230 educational establishments closed, including 214 schools from kindergarten to junior high school in 35 communes, 11 high schools, and 6 continuing education centers.

Ms. Nguyen Ngoc Thu, Director of the Department of Education and Training of Cao Bang province, said: In the days when the natural disaster situation is very complicated, to ensure the safety of people and facilities of educational establishments in the province, the Department of Education and Training of Cao Bang province requires educational establishments to proactively report to local leaders and have plans to ensure absolute safety for people and facilities of schools.

At the same time, let students take time off from school when necessary; coordinate closely with parents and localities to ensure their safety; create conditions for temporary shelters for students and people when necessary.

The Department of Education and Training of Cao Bang province has issued an official dispatch and used many ways to inform and request leaders of communes and wards to closely direct, guide and support educational establishments to ensure safety for people and school facilities; closely coordinate with the Department of Education and Training to direct, grasp information and promptly respond.

At the same time, we request parents and all people to manage and remind students not to go through dangerous areas; promptly grasp information and notifications, and work with schools to ensure student safety.

According to the Director of the Department of Education and Training of Cao Bang province, immediately after the flood receded, on October 1, all schools in the province organized to clean up and rearrange their facilities. Some schools that met the conditions allowed students to return to school on October 2.

"The Department always closely monitors and directs schools to only organize classes when absolute safety for students is guaranteed," Ms. Nguyen Ngoc Thu emphasized.

After storm No. 10 passed, Cao Bang province suffered severe consequences, but the whole province, especially schools, quickly recovered, soon stabilizing teaching and learning activities, ensuring the study program for students.
