Grown from love and respect

GD&TĐ - Handling students who make mistakes and violations is a normal activity in the school's educational work, but always receives great attention from families and society.

In reality, many teachers have a very delicate way of handling things, influencing students with love and responsibility, helping them realize their mistakes, correct them and grow up. However, there are still teachers who are limited in their pedagogical skills, have a rigid way of handling problems, and use disciplinary measures that hurt students, leaving serious consequences.

The old concept of “spare the rod and punish the child, and give the child sweets and rewards” still permeates the education system, making many people believe that “a painful beating will make the child remember for life” will help the child be afraid and not reoffend. But in reality, fear has never been a sustainable way to nurture character.

On September 15, 2025, the Ministry of Education and Training issued Circular 19/2025/TT-BGDDT, effective from October 31, 2025, replacing the old regulation from 1988. The most notable difference is that the new Circular completely eliminates disciplinary forms that are violent and insult students' dignity, emphasizing the principle of educational and humane discipline for the progress of learners.

Many teachers believe that this is an important turning point; because if students go to school in anxiety and fear, they will not only lose interest in learning and positive emotions, but will also be easily pushed out of their "safe circle", finding toxic environments and bad groups of friends. On the contrary, when they are loved and respected, students will act with self-awareness, not fear.

The view on positive discipline is not new. In particular, since the implementation of Resolution 29-NQ/TW on fundamental and comprehensive innovation in education and training, the education sector has focused on innovation in both content, teaching methods and behavior, and discipline organization in schools.

One of the principles of positive discipline is that students are allowed to make mistakes, because everyone grows from their mistakes. What is important is how teachers handle mistakes to turn them into opportunities for learning. Before giving disciplinary measures, teachers need to find the root cause, just like a doctor must diagnose the disease correctly in order to cure it.

One teacher shared: “I learned to smile, be patient, and listen more. Sometimes just a small question: 'Is there anything sad today?', or a birthday wish sent to a student, is enough to make them feel cared for and change their attitude towards learning.

Students are sensitive, they can distinguish between formal punishment and sincere feelings. When teachers are fair and kind, students will follow. If teachers know how to listen, students will open their hearts. Then, discipline will be built on a foundation of love and self-awareness.

Of course, changing viewpoints is not easy; changing but being determined to do it effectively is even harder. This requires patience, time and consensus from many sides. Each teacher needs to prepare a mindset for change, practice listening skills, understanding, and handling situations with fairness and humanity.

Education authorities and school leaders must create all training and support conditions so that teachers can effectively implement positive discipline. More importantly, schools need to coordinate closely with parents to jointly guide and resolve difficulties in students' behavior and psychology.

A teacher’s decision to discipline can affect a person’s development for life. Therefore, discipline must come from love, to arouse in students the desire to progress and improve themselves. When teachers are humane enough to listen and be tolerant, and determined enough to uphold principles, discipline will no longer be a fear, but an opportunity for students to learn to grow.
