In the fields of Truong Ninh commune (Quang Tri), the atmosphere of rice harvesting these days is very urgent to prevent storm No. 9 from causing heavy rain. All households are taking advantage of the clear weather, no rain, mobilizing maximum manpower to harvest and transport rice home. Many areas have been mechanized for harvesting, helping to shorten the time, bringing rice home before the storm hits.
Mr. Truong Van Le, Director of Minh Trung Cooperative (Truong Ninh Commune, Quang Tri) said that storm No. 9 is approaching and is forecast to cause heavy rain. If we wait for the rice to ripen, just one heavy rain and strong wind will mean a total loss. Therefore, people must hurry to harvest early according to the motto "green at home is better than old in the field".
According to Mr. Truong Van Le, this year's Summer-Autumn crop, Minh Trung Cooperative planted 120 hectares of rice, with a yield of 6 tons/hectare. Currently, the cooperative's harvested rice area is about 60-70%, and there are still a few areas where the rice has not yet ripened, but people are urgently harvesting to avoid falling and flooding.
Currently, in Quang Tri province, there are over 3,000 hectares of rice in the ripening and harvesting stage; nearly 300 hectares of corn, 20,000 hectares of cassava, and over 2,500 hectares in the fruit development and harvesting stage. In addition, there are 3,700 hectares of coffee in the preparation stage for harvesting, over 3,100 hectares of pepper in the flower bud differentiation stage, over 30,000 hectares of rubber in the latex tapping stage, and 10,700 hectares of fruit trees in the fruit development and harvesting stage.
In response to the forecast of heavy rains due to the impact of storm No. 9, Quang Tri province has requested localities to urgently direct and mobilize people to focus on harvesting rice and crops on ripe areas. Authorities at all levels have coordinated with agricultural cooperatives to mobilize harvesters, means of transport, as well as supporting human resources to speed up the harvesting process and minimize damage caused by heavy rains and strong winds.
Mr. Bui Phuoc Trang, Head of the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection of Quang Tri province, said that the area of unharvested rice in the province is mainly re-sown rice after the impact of storm No. 1. The provincial agricultural sector directed localities to take advantage of both day and night to mobilize human resources and means to urgently harvest the "storm-preventing" rice.
In addition, for other crops such as cassava, corn, potatoes, beans, etc., fruit crops, the agricultural sector has also provided guidance to localities, sent technical staff from service centers, and plant protection stations to localities to guide farmers in harvesting, pruning, and reinforcement, etc. to minimize damage caused by storms and rains.
