According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), crab products continued to maintain a steady growth momentum in the second quarter, while crabs and three-sided crabs decreased slightly in the last month of the quarter. In the first six months of the year, Vietnamese crabs and other crustaceans were present in 25 global markets, of which most of the key markets recorded strong growth.

The main driving force comes from China, a market that favors Vietnamese live crabs, along with stable purchasing power from Japan. The competitive advantage of Vietnamese crabs lies in their quality, which is free of antibiotics, helping to strengthen trust in demanding markets. In addition, Australia recorded a growth rate of 58% in the second quarter after a period of decline, while exports to the EU still increased by 71% over the same period, although slower than in the first quarter.
Along with the breakthrough in export volume, domestic purchasing prices also increased. In Cai Nuoc (Ca Mau), traders paid up to 700,000 VND/kg for type 1 square crab, type 2 fluctuated from 350,000-500,000 VND/kg. Type 1 crab at the seaport reached 500,000-600,000 VND/kg, type 3 from 200,000-300,000 VND/kg.
Ms. Duong Thi Bich Nam - Director of Du Thai Binh Limited Liability Company said that unlike last year when China almost stopped importing crabs in the summer, this year the amount of goods to this market has increased sharply. "The wholesale price of crab with roe has increased to 650,000 VND/1 kg, crab meat is 400,000-450,000 VND/1 kg. Grade 1 goods must be beautiful, with a lot of roe, 1 kg has only 2-3 crabs", she said.
Despite high export growth, the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers warns that businesses still face challenges in terms of quarantine, farming area codes and price competition. The association recommends that localities expand standard farming areas, invest in cold storage and logistics to exploit the live crab segment, which has high profit margins. Businesses should prioritize long-term contracts to avoid being forced to lower prices during the main season.
Demand is forecast to continue to increase in the third and fourth quarters, thanks to the festive season in China, South Korea and many Asian countries. The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers forecasts that crab exports could exceed US$350 million for the entire year thanks to rising global demand.
