Establishing public ownership of the stone sculpture of Hanuman

On August 21, the People's Committee of Quang Ngai province issued a decision to establish the people's ownership of buried, hidden, buried, or sunken assets that individuals randomly found and voluntarily handed over to the Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism in the form of handing over the assets to the Provincial General Museum for organization and management.

Accordingly, the people's ownership of the Hanuman Monkey God Statue, stone sculpture, dated 11-12 (Champa culture), property discovered and voluntarily surrendered by Mr. Duong Dinh Luc, residing in Van Tuong commune, Quang Ngai province, was established. It is currently kept at the Quang Ngai Provincial Museum.

The People's Committee of Quang Ngai province assigned the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism to be responsible for guiding the Quang Ngai Provincial Museum to receive, manage and use assets effectively in accordance with regulations.

The Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the province presides over and directs the Quang Ngai Provincial Museum to coordinate with relevant agencies and units to pay rewards to individuals who discover assets according to regulations.

Previously, in March 2021, the statue of the monkey god Hanuman was discovered by Mr. Luc while he was fishing at sea. According to Mr. Luc, the stone statue was submerged under a layer of sand, the location of discovery was about 50m from the shore, 4m deep. The monkey statue was very heavy, Mr. Luc had to mobilize relatives to hire a crane to salvage it and bring it home.

The Quang Ngai Provincial Museum then set up an appraisal council. The results showed that the Hanuman monkey god statue was made of fine-grained sandstone, 84 cm high, 40 cm wide, and weighed 150 kg. The statue consists of an octagonal stone pedestal 14 cm high and a 70 cm high statue body, in a sitting position.

Details such as the round head, bulging eyes, high nose bridge, wide mouth, circular patterns and tassels around the belly are in the late Champa sculpture style, and are also influenced by Khmer art.
