Do cars with automatically renewed registration have to pay road fees immediately?

Cars are automatically renewed for inspection, but road fees are paid according to the old inspection period, causing many car owners to worry about being fined when participating in traffic. Please refer to the article below.

Circular 8/2023/TT-BGTVT takes effect from June 3, according to which cars with less than 9 seats that are not used for transportation business will have their certificates and inspection stamps automatically confirmed for an additional 6 months without having to go to motor vehicle inspection centers.

However, the road maintenance fee payment cycle often coincides with the vehicle inspection cycle, so when the vehicle's registration is automatically renewed, many car owners worry that participating in traffic with a vehicle that has overdue road fee payment will be punished.

In fact, if the road maintenance fee has not been paid, the vehicle owner can pay the fee at the next inspection. This is completely legal.

Payment of road maintenance fees for cars of organizations and individuals registered in Vietnam is carried out according to Circular 70/2021.

Accordingly, in case the vehicle owner has not paid the road use fee for previous inspection cycles within the prescribed time limit, in addition to the fee payable for the next cycle, the vehicle owner must also pay the unpaid fee for the previous cycle.

Decree 100/2019/ND-CP, as amended by Decree 123/2021/ND-CP, also stipulates that in case of expiration of road maintenance fee, the vehicle owner will not be fined; the vehicle inspection unit will collect the road maintenance fee in the next inspection period.

Regarding the automatic renewal of the family car inspection cycle certificate, car owners can look it up on the website of the Vietnam Register at: http://www.vr.org.vn/, go to "Check for inspection renewal", or go directly to the link: https://giahanxcg.vr.org.vn, then print out the renewal certificate to use when participating in traffic.

Vehicle owners can look up information on the Department of Registration's website by following these steps:

Access the website of the Vietnam Register http://www.vr.org.vn, go to "Check Inspection Renewal" section, the website will appear: https://giahanxcg.vr.org.vn, the screen will look like this:

Enter the following information: Registration plate, Inspection certificate serial number, authentication code then press the "Search" key.

Enter the following information: Registration plate, Inspection certificate serial number, authentication code then press the "Search" key.

In case the certificate is granted and is eligible for extension, the result will be displayed as the following screen:

Vehicle owner clicks on the link containing the Inspection Information Confirmation Form.
