India completes G20 presidency, hands over to Brazil

India takes over the G20 Presidency from Indonesia on December 1, 2022, and today marks the first year of its tenure.

In a statement marking the milestone, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was pleased that during his tenure as chairman, India had "achieved extraordinary things: reviving multilateralism, raising the voices of the South, championing development and fighting for the empowerment of women everywhere".

"When we assumed this responsibility last year, the global landscape was facing multi-faceted challenges: recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic, looming climate threats, financial instability and debt distress in developing countries, all coexisting against a backdrop of declining multilateralism. Amidst these conflicts and rivalries, development cooperation suffered and progress was hampered. As the G20 Chair, India sought to present the world with an alternative to the status quo, moving from GDP-centric to people-centric development," Prime Minister Modi said.

During India’s presidency, the G20 achieved 87 outcomes and adopted 118 documents, including the New Delhi Declaration of the G20 leaders. In addition, the inclusion of the African Union (AU) as a permanent member of the G20 brought 55 African countries into the forum, expanding the organization to 80% of the global population.

India has launched the G20 Action Plan 2023 to accelerate progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopting a cross-cutting, action-oriented approach to inter-related issues including health, education , gender equality and environmental sustainability.

During its G20 Presidency, India has also led discussions on geopolitical issues and their impact on economic growth and development.

India handed over the G20 presidency to Brazil at the closing ceremony of the leaders' meeting in September and Brazil will officially assume the new position from December 1.

"When we handed over the G20 Presidency to Brazil, we did so with the confidence that every step we take for people, for the planet, for peace and prosperity, will continue for many years to come," said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
