This year, Le Minh Anh, a 9th grade student at Cau Giay Secondary School ( Hanoi ), registered his first choice at Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, a school that has always been in the top of the city in terms of standard scores for many years.
Since childhood, Minh Anh always dreamed of studying at this school. To achieve her goal, in addition to studying at school, Minh Anh also studied by herself and participated in study groups with her friends.

In the final weeks before the 10th grade entrance exam, the family atmosphere became more tense than ever. Minh Anh's parents clearly assigned who would pick her up and drop her off, and who would cook.
The family dinner is always sumptuous, full of nutritious dishes, especially the meal time is pushed earlier than usual. After dinner, Minh Anh sits at the study table, her parents also do not turn on the TV or radio, creating the most quiet space for her to study.
"My parents even set a rule of not answering the phone after 9 p.m., not gathering to eat or drink, not entertaining guests so that I have space to focus on studying, not be distracted, and be in the right spirit of walking lightly, speaking softly, and smiling charmingly," the male student said.
Every day, Minh Anh spends at least 12-14 hours studying, from early morning to late at night. His schedule is packed with Math, Literature and English, three compulsory subjects.
In the morning, he wakes up at 6:30 to have breakfast and go to school. At noon, Minh Anh takes the opportunity to practice exam papers and review the knowledge learned during the day.
At 5:00 p.m., male students go home to eat, rest, then continue studying at 7:00 p.m. and finish studying at 1-2:00 a.m. the next morning.
"There were times when I felt very tired and wanted to give up because of the overwhelming amount of knowledge. No matter how many practice tests I did, it was never enough, but thinking about my family gave me more motivation to try harder," the student confided.
In addition to self-study, Minh Anh and his friends often study in groups, share experiences and help each other during exam preparation. Minh Anh's study group often discusses and solves problems together, which not only helps the male student understand the lesson better but also reduces pressure when there is someone to share with.
Nguyen Ngoc Anh, a 9th grade student at Yen Hoa Secondary School (Cau Giay District), is also diligently studying for the 10th grade entrance exam. Her first choice is Yen Hoa High School. Last year, the school had a standard score of nearly 8.5 points per subject, always in the top 10 schools with the highest entrance scores in the city.
In addition, Anh also registered for Chinese class, Foreign Language High School and Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted.
Currently, Anh studies in the morning, goes to the library to study at noon, and in the afternoon reviews three subjects: Math, Literature, and English according to the school schedule. In the evening and on weekends, Anh continues to study four more subjects (Math, Literature, English, Chinese).
"I only get to rest on Sunday mornings. On the other days, I leave my extra classes around 9-10pm and then go home to continue studying," Anh said.
Anh shared that recently she lost 4kg due to irregular eating. However, Anh still told herself that she would try her best and then make up for it in a few weeks.
"Because I want to get into top schools, I have to try hard," Anh said.
Ms. Tran Thi Cham, a teacher at the 10th grade exam preparation center, said that this is the "sprint" period, if taken advantage of well, students will review a lot of important knowledge. However, due to not balancing the schedule between studying and resting, many students fall into a state of exhaustion and stress.
"This year, the number of students registering for the 10th grade entrance exam has increased, which may cause the benchmark scores to increase, making the race for places at public schools more intense.
Therefore, parents need to pay more attention to their children, supplement nutrition in meals, and advise their children to study on a scientific schedule," Ms. Cham advised.
Besides, ensuring sleep time is very important, parents should advise their children not to stay up too late and participate in more physical activities to ensure health, avoiding exhaustion from studying too much when the exam has not yet started.
Mr. Cao Duc Khoa, Principal of Huynh Khuong Ninh Secondary School (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City) also said that at this time, students are easily under pressure because they study too much. Therefore, in the last weeks, the school will only maintain one session per day, and the review will also end one week before the exam so that students have more time to rest.
"We often advise students not to stay up too late to study, because it will greatly affect their health. We also recommend that parents should not put pressure on their children. Let your children have a comfortable mentality before entering the exam," advised Mr. Cao Duc Khoa.
According to statistics from the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, out of more than 133,000 junior high school graduates this year, nearly 106,500 students registered for the first-choice entrance exam to public high schools in the city. The school with the highest "competition" rate for grade 10 this year is Yen Hoa High School with 1 "competition" to 3.11.
According to the public 10th grade entrance exam plan, candidates will take 3 exams: Math, Literature, Foreign Language. The Math and Literature exams will be in essay format, with 120 minutes for each subject. For Foreign Language, candidates will take a 60-minute multiple choice test, choosing one of the following languages: English, French, German, Japanese, or Korean.
10th grade admission score = (Math score + Literature score) x 2 + Foreign language score + Priority score.
