Typhoon Yagi is considered the most devastating storm to hit Vietnam in three decades, affecting 3.6 million people. With nearly 400,000 houses damaged or submerged, and infrastructure devastated, the total damage is estimated to exceed 3.3 billion USD (81.5 trillion VND).

Under the framework of the Joint UN Programme on Storm Recovery, the UNDP initiative aims to meet urgent needs and support long-term recovery of the most affected communities, including Lao Cai, Yen Bai , Hai Phong and Quang Ninh provinces.
Building on the success of the 2017 Korean-funded Typhoon Damrey recovery project, the initiative will address urgent needs, including providing household kits and cash transfers to affected households.
At the same time, the initiative will empower affected communities and enhance disaster resilience through the construction of storm- and flood-resistant small-scale houses and community infrastructure, along with the creation of short-term employment opportunities through work-in-return programs.
Mr. Choi Youngsam, Korean Ambassador to Vietnam, shared: “In the spirit of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, the Korean Government promptly announced an emergency aid package of 2 million USD to support Vietnam.
Since then, we have continued to work with the Government of Vietnam and international organizations, including UNDP, to ensure that this emergency aid is used effectively and distributed promptly to areas and communities that need support most after natural disasters."
The implementation of this initiative will be carried out in close coordination with local authorities, in consultation with affected communities and with priority given to vulnerable groups, including female-headed households, ethnic minorities and people with disabilities, to ensure that those most in need of support are assisted.
Ms. Ramla Khalidi, UNDP Resident Representative, appreciated the timely support from the Republic of Korea, saying, “This generous assistance from the Republic of Korea has made an important contribution to our recovery efforts after Typhoon Yagi.
We have already started working to ensure help reaches those in need as soon as possible. Going beyond supporting early recovery, we are committed to helping communities build back better and increase their resilience to future climate extremes."
