According to the Defense Imagery Information Distribution Service (DVIDS), participating ships include the US Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Dewey (DDG 105) and Australia's Anzac-class frigate HMAS Ballarat (FFH 155).
Over the two days, the ships conducted formation maneuvers, maritime communications training, simulated firing drills, information sharing, and joint movements through the South China Sea.
“This is a great opportunity to work with Ballarat and our Australian allies,” said USS Dewey Commander Ivan Dobrev. “Enhancing interoperability with allies and partners in the Indo -Pacific is key to strengthening collective deterrence against any adversary that threatens peace and stability in the region.”
The U.S. Navy routinely trains with allies and partners in the region as a demonstration of our shared commitment to international law and a free and open Indo- Pacific . Bilateral training activities like this one provide an opportunity to hone and develop interoperability between allied navies.
“This operation is part of Ballarat’s regular deployment to the region and is an important demonstration of Australia’s commitment to supporting an open, stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific where international law is respected,” said HMAS Ballarat Commander Dean Uren.
The Australian Defence Force has been operating regularly in the region for decades, he stressed.
USS Dewey is forward-deployed and assigned to Destroyer Squadron 15 (DESRON 15), the largest destroyer unit in the US Navy and the primary surface force of the US 7th Fleet.
The 7th Fleet is the US Navy's largest forward-deployed fleet, regularly cooperating and operating with allies and partners to maintain a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
