On August 6, following a volunteer group, we arrived at the border village of Ta Do (Muong Tip commune, Nghe An ), where in just one week, two flash floods caused heavy damage to houses, property and traffic works.

At Muong Tip Kindergarten, because it is located next to the Nam Mo River, when the flood swept through, the entire school was submerged in mud, and teaching equipment was submerged and completely damaged.

For nearly half a month now, the government, armed forces, and teachers have been working hard to clean up and overcome the consequences of the floods. Most teachers who live in other areas have had to stay at the school to take care of the repairs, clean up, wipe down tables and chairs, search for, collect, and dry books, etc., in order to stabilize teaching and learning.

Taking a break after cleaning the school with the teachers, Ms. Pham Thi Hong, Principal of Muong Tip Kindergarten, sadly said: "When you came to the place, you saw clearly that the school's facilities were severely damaged, especially the Xop Phe kindergarten with 4 classrooms completely collapsed, with an estimated loss of more than 5 billion VND. The new school year is approaching, we don't know how to cope. Currently, the school is coordinating with the authorities to urgently clean up mud, trash... and really needs the cooperation and support of the whole country to enter the new school year."

According to statistics from the Nghe An Department of Education and Training, the storm and its circulation caused severe damage to 52 schools in the area, mainly in the western mountainous region. Of these, 18 schools were completely flooded, including the main campus and some remote campuses, 22 schools with remote campuses were flooded, and 12 schools suffered landslides, rocks and soil flowing into the school, roofs blown off, walls collapsed, etc.

Schools that were not buried by mud and rubbish were submerged in floodwaters for hours, causing severe damage to desks, chairs, books, and equipment; facing a new school year full of difficulties.

Immediately after the historic flood that caused heavy loss of life and property in the communes of Western Nghe An, the Department of Education and Training of Nghe An organized a campaign to support the recovery of the consequences of floods caused by storm Wipha. The historic flood occurred when the new school year was approaching, causing difficulties and passivity for schools.

Director of Nghe An Department of Education and Training Thai Van Thanh hopes: “Currently, many schools and school sites in the highlands have suffered heavy damage, floodwaters have caused many schools to collapse, sweeping away all property, books and equipment. In recent days, the department has also directed units to urgently arrange books, school supplies, equipment... to schools that have suffered heavy damage. To quickly overcome the damage, Nghe An's education sector is in dire need of the attention and sharing of colleagues and people across the country, to help people, teachers and students in flood-affected areas return to normal life."
