Foods that help the body 'immune' to cancer

New research suggests that increasing anti-inflammatory foods and limiting inflammatory foods (like processed red meat) may help reduce the risk of colorectal cancer.

Below are food groups rich in anti-inflammatory substances that help prevent colorectal cancer that experts recommend supplementing, according to Eating Well (USA).

Beans

Beans, lentils, and soybeans are high in fiber, which helps prevent constipation and feeds beneficial bacteria in the large intestine. Eating two or more servings of beans a week reduces the risk of colorectal cancer by 32% compared with not eating beans.

This effect is thought to be due to the fermentable fiber and resistant starch in beans, which pass directly to the colon almost undigested, where bacteria convert them into short-chain fatty acids, which reduce inflammation and oxidative stress.

Walnut

In addition to fiber, nuts contain unsaturated fats, magnesium, zinc, and many plant compounds with anti-inflammatory properties.

Walnuts are particularly rich in phenolic compounds, which have been shown to inhibit cancer cell growth, reduce signs of tumor formation, and even slow cell aging.

Dark green leafy vegetables

Vegetables such as kale, spinach, and Swiss chard can help neutralize the harmful effects of eating too much red meat, which increases the risk of colorectal cancer by up to 15%.

People at high risk (high BMI, high red meat intake) who ate 1 cup of green vegetables per day for 4 weeks had lower levels of DNA damage and reduced markers of inflammation.

Berries

The characteristic red and blue colors of berries come from anthocyanins — pigments with powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.

A cup of berries a day at breakfast or as a snack can provide a steady supply of these protective compounds, helping to stop inflammation in its tracks.

Berries may reduce the negative effects of a diet high in red and processed meat, and inhibit colon cancer cells.

Flaxseed

They are rich in fiber, which aids digestion and reduces the risk of colon cancer. In addition, flaxseeds contain lignans - a type of polyphenol with powerful anti-cancer properties.

It also provides alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) – a precursor to anti-inflammatory compounds in the body.

You should chew flaxseed thoroughly or use ground flaxseed to help your body absorb maximum nutrients, because if you swallow the seeds whole, many valuable nutrients will be missed.

Other ways to reduce your risk of colorectal cancer

Eat plenty of fiber : Vegetables, fruits, beans and whole grains not only help with bowel movements but are also rich in antioxidants and bioactive compounds that have anti-cancer effects.

Stay active : Exercise disrupts the mechanisms of cancer growth and spread, thus promoting prevention.

Watch for symptoms : Don't ignore signs like changes in bowel habits, blood in the stool, persistent abdominal pain, or unexpected weight loss. Early detection is especially important as colorectal cancer rates are rising in young people.

Don't delay screening : Health organizations recommend starting screening at age 45. If detected early, the survival rate is over 90%, but if the disease spreads, this rate drops to only about 16%.
