Parents react to students wearing 3 uniforms per week, school must stop

Parents of a primary school in Dak Lak said that the school's constant change of uniforms, each year with a different color and the requirement to wear many colors during the week, is annoying, costly, and does not create a unique identity.

A reader who is a parent reported that this person's child is a student at Ly Tu Trong Primary School in Ea Drang Commune ( Dak Lak Province). For 3 years, the school has changed the uniform every year, at a cost of 160,000 VND/set.

Students have to wear 3 types of uniforms a week.

Speaking to reporters, parents of students at this school specifically stated: In addition to blue pants, white shirts and gym uniforms, students must also wear colored polo shirts. In the 2023-2024 school year, the school requires yellow shirts (no logo).

In the 2024-2025 school year, the school will change to orange shirts with white collars and logos.

By the 2025-2026 school year, the school will continue to announce a change to green shirts and a schedule for wearing them: Monday and Wednesday are green shirts; Tuesday and Thursday are orange shirts; and Fridays can choose white, green, or orange shirts.

"We agree that adding a logo makes it easier to identify which school students come from, but changing the color every year seems like a waste.

Not to mention the school's requirement to wear many different uniforms during the week makes things more confusing. Parents have to remember what color their children wear every day, and their children are afraid that if they wear the wrong uniform, they will be scolded," one parent said.

Another parent suggested: "We agree to buy uniforms for our children, but we should only maintain one main color like the previous orange shirt.

Every year as students grow older, uniforms also need to be changed. Just having a rule that on Mondays we wear white shirts and blue/black pants, and on the remaining days we wear the official school uniform is enough, neat and consistent.

What did the principal explain?

On August 25, Mr. Nguyen Tran Quan - principal of Ly Tu Trong Primary School - admitted that the school had many uniforms at the same time as parents reported.

But he said that in the 2023-2024 school year, the school only requires students to wear blue pants and a white shirt as their uniform, but the parents' association proposed adding a colored shirt to change during the week.

The school allows it but doesn't consider it a uniform because there's no logo and parents buy the yellow uniform.

By 2024-2025, the school will choose orange shirts, which are more prominent and have a logo to create a unique mark for the school's students. At that time, the school will only have one uniform, the orange shirt, and it will be required to be worn on certain days.

At the end of last school year, the school planned to switch to green shirts to create a more prominent image in the 2025-2026 school year, so it announced it to class groups and parents for discussion.

"However, many opposing opinions have been raised, disagreeing with the addition of uniforms. This is just a plan, the school does not require parents to change uniforms. If parents do not agree, we will not implement it," Mr. Quan affirmed.

There will be no new uniforms at Ly Tu Trong Primary School.

On August 25, Mr. Ngo Minh Canh - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Ea Drang Commune - said that the commune had received information from parents about Ly Tu Trong Primary School's plan to make new uniforms for students this school year.

Immediately after receiving the information, the commune requested the school to report and assigned the Department of Culture and Society to work to clarify.

Through discussion, the school said that the new uniforms were only in the discussion stage with some parents of first graders. However, because some people misunderstood that the school had already implemented it, there were objections.

Faced with mixed opinions, the school decided not to implement a new uniform, but to keep it as it is.

Mr. Canh emphasized that right from the beginning of the school year, Ea Drang commune has directed schools in the area on revenue and expenditure issues, including content related to uniforms.

"The general view is that making uniforms needs to be economical and efficient, avoiding waste for parents. In that spirit, the commune encourages schools to let students wear blue pants and white shirts, not making elaborate, colorful uniforms," he said.
