10% Growth by 2026: Aspiration and Action

While many international organizations forecast that Vietnam's economy will only grow around 6% in 2026, the Ministry of Finance, when drafting the Socio-Economic Development Plan for next year, set a GDP growth target of 10%.

The important support for believing in the possibility of 10% growth lies in the achievements of 2025. In a recent report, the Ministry of Finance said that the economy has basically completed all 15/15 main targets, in which GDP is estimated to reach at least 8%, GDP per capita reaches the mark of 5,000 USD - bringing Vietnam into the upper middle-income group. Inflation is controlled at about 4%, a positive figure in the context of many other economies struggling with price pressures.

Not stopping at numbers, the economy in 2025 also shows the spread of domestic consumption, strong export recovery, accelerated public investment and FDI capital continuing to be directed to high-tech fields. This is the "pedestal" that creates the foundation for a higher growth target in 2026.

However, it is impossible to ignore the fact that the global economic landscape is complex and unpredictable. The World Bank recently forecast that Vietnam's GDP will increase by only 6.1% in 2026, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) gave a figure of 6%, and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) even lower at 5.6%. These forecasts reflect external risks: unstable global trade growth, potential geopolitical surprises, inflationary pressures that have not cooled down, and the cost of capital remaining high.

Even domestically, the economy still depends heavily on the FDI sector, while the competitiveness of domestic enterprises remains weak. Public investment, although being promoted, is still facing slow disbursement and uneven quality. Institutional reform has made progress, but is not strong enough to unleash the full potential.

Therefore, the 10% growth target in 2026 not only requires doubled efforts but also "turning point" solutions.

According to the Prime Minister's direction, the 2026 plan must "ensure double-digit growth targets" through synchronous and focused solutions. In the draft Socio-Economic Development Plan for 2026, the Ministry of Finance proposed 10 main groups of tasks, emphasizing institutional improvement, maintaining macroeconomic stability, developing infrastructure, science and technology, high-quality human resources and innovation.

The notable point is the expectation placed on dynamic localities such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Hai Phong, Dong Nai, Lam Dong... If these "locomotives" achieve double-digit growth, they will pull the entire economy up, creating a positive resonance effect.

In an uncertain context, the 10% growth target by 2026 may be controversial, even considered “excessive” compared to international forecasts. But from another perspective, it is a matter of aspiration and vision. A country that wants to escape the middle-income trap cannot take small, safe steps forever. It is high aspirations that will force us to act more decisively, more creatively, and dare to accept more profound reforms.

Therefore, the question here is not “will we reach 10% or not”, but “what will we do to reach that number”, to bring the country into a new era, an era of national wealth and prosperity. 2026, therefore, will be a test of the mettle, will and ability to innovate of the entire economy. When the foundation is consolidated with real reforms, double-digit growth will no longer be a distant dream!
