This afternoon, September 9, Hanoi Medical University organized the Match Day event (also known as the day of choosing a major) for candidates who have qualified after the 49th residency exam. The selection mechanism gives priority to those with high scores. The selection results show that obstetrics and gynecology is the most attractive major (out of 38 majors).

Specifically, the Obstetrics and Gynecology major at Hanoi Medical University this year has 12 quotas, all 12 students choosing this major are in the top 26 students with the highest scores in the residency exam that Hanoi Medical University organized in mid-August. In which, both the valedictorian (Tran Thi Minh Anh) and the salutatorian (Nguyen Dinh Hoang) of the exam chose Obstetrics and Gynecology.
The majors chosen by the top 20 students with the highest scores, in addition to obstetrics and gynecology (9 students chose), also include: plastic surgery (3), oncology (2), pediatrics (2), diagnostic imaging (2), dermatology (1), anesthesia (1). These are also majors that candidates with scores outside the top 50 have little or no chance of choosing (because the quota has been filled from the students with the highest scores). If we expand our consideration of the majors chosen by the top 50 students with the highest scores, we can see that there are additional majors that candidates prefer: eyes, ear - nose - throat.
Candidates with higher scores have more options.
It is known that in 2024, Hanoi Medical University will only recruit 444 positions to train resident doctors for 38 majors. There are 860 candidates taking the medical exam (417 positions), 20 candidates taking the maxillofacial exam (15 positions), 35 candidates taking the traditional medicine exam (12 positions).
Candidates for dentistry and traditional medicine can only register for the training major that matches their exam until the quota is full. Candidates for medicine can register for the remaining 36 majors.
During the Match Day event, the organizers will call students to register their wishes in order from highest to lowest score. Each student is only allowed to register once. Most majors only have about 10 quotas (some majors only have 2 quotas, some majors have 43 - 53 quotas). The higher the candidates' ranking in the exam results, the more opportunities they have to choose the major they love the most.
Therefore, students whose scores are not in the top 20 must prepare for themselves many options so that when the majors they most desire to study have met the quota, they can switch to other majors. According to tradition, the major selection part of medical candidates is the most dramatic part of the Match Day event.
Candidates who pass the residency exam will become resident medical students. The residency training period is 3 years. It is expected that the 49th class of residents of Hanoi Medical University will enroll in early October.
According to the regulations of the Ministry of Health , the residency exam is only for students who graduate from university in the same year and candidates can only take it once at one university (candidates can take the residency exam organized by another university in the same year they graduate from university). Because candidates do not have the opportunity to retake the exam, medical students consider this a special exam.
With this year’s exam organized by Hanoi Medical University, in addition to students who have just graduated from Hanoi Medical University, there are also students who have just graduated from most other universities that offer health training from Da Nang and beyond. After the exam, there are 787 candidates who are eligible to participate in the major selection event (those who have all three subjects scored 5 points or higher).
