Returning to the dormitory when the clock had struck past midnight, Ngoc Lan (from Yen Bai ) - a final year student at Moscow State University of Management - was still filled with pride.

On the evening of May 3, Ngoc Lan witnessed for the first time the delegation of the Vietnam People's Army completing a preliminary rehearsal to prepare for the parade to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Victory Day in the Great Patriotic War (May 9, 1945 - May 9, 2025).

A few days ago, the young female student could not hide her emotions when watching the images of the parade taking place in Ho Chi Minh City on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification Day.

The footage from her hometown made her even more excited. Ngoc Lan arranged her work to be there at 3 p.m., joining the crowd waiting for the special moment in Moscow.

Hundreds of Vietnamese expatriates living in Russia also brought red flags with yellow stars and shirts printed with the Vietnamese national flag, handing them out to everyone with the hope of creating a brilliant red color in the heart of Moscow.

When meeting the soldiers, Ngoc Lan was not only impressed by their serious demeanor and even height, but also by their friendliness and cheerfulness when they took the opportunity to interact and chat with the locals before the training session.

"Hundreds of people stood on the crowded sidewalk but everyone was happy, there was no jostling. I was really moved when I heard everyone sing the National Anthem in unison, Like having Uncle Ho on the great victory day, Joining hands in a big circle ...", Ngoc Lan shared.

Notably, when the Vietnamese delegation passed by, Ngoc Lan recognized a fellow countryman who was studying at a military school. Due to the time crunch, the two only had time to quickly say hello. However, those few short seconds also made the girl from Vietnam feel the meaning.

She said that although she could not enter Red Square on May 9, many international students would be present to watch the parade on a big screen.

Proud to hear the Vietnamese National Anthem

Since the beginning of the week, information about the parade's training schedule has been shared by the Vietnamese community in Russia on various groups. After hearing the news, Thanh Thuy - a graduate student at the Higher School of Economics (HSE) - and her friends arranged their work, took the subway for an hour to the center of Moscow, and joined the crowd pouring into Red Square.

Although the weather in late spring in Moscow is warmer than a few months ago, the evenings are still chilly. That still cannot stop hundreds of Vietnamese expatriates and students holding red flags with yellow stars and Russian flags, patiently waiting.

"I was at the road beside Red Square at 5pm, waiting until 10:30pm to witness the moment the Vietnamese delegation passed by. The weather was very cold, but the Vietnamese people together created a very excited and warm atmosphere," Thuy said.

When the parade of the Vietnam People's Army appeared, seeing the red flag with a yellow star fluttering, everyone seemed to burst into tears. Hundreds of Vietnamese people shouted "Vietnam" and sang the national anthem with great enthusiasm right in the heart of Russia.

Before Thuy were 68 soldiers walking in unison, strong and majestic. In the green uniform, each soldier's face shone with strength, determination and pride.

"Since I was little, I have watched military parades on TV many times, but this is the first time I have witnessed with my own eyes the strong steps of Vietnamese soldiers in the historic Red Square. Everyone was moved because not everyone has the opportunity to witness this moment," Thuy confided.

On the evening of May 3, not only Vietnamese people, but also a large community of foreigners living in Russia poured into the square to cheer.

What touched Thuy the most was that many Russians chose to stand in the area with many Vietnamese people. They sang together and took souvenir photos, sharing the friendly atmosphere.

"The number of Vietnamese people present was not the largest group, but they sang the national anthem most majestically. Being far away from home, witnessing those images, I don't know what to say other than pride," Thuy added.

Present among the crowd cheering for the Vietnamese soldiers, Tien Vinh - a 4th year student in Russia - along with many Vietnamese people sang songs praising President Ho Chi Minh and the homeland, creating an emotional atmosphere.

During 4 years living in Russia, this is the first time Vinh has been able to participate in an event with such a large number of Vietnamese people.

"We waited for 5-6 hours in the cold weather, but everyone was filled with pride. The presence of the Vietnam People's Army soldiers at Red Square was a great impression. Wherever they are, they always receive love, encouragement and support from the Vietnamese people," Vinh said.
