This is an important political and social event, an opportunity for the whole industry to review the glorious historical journey, pay tribute to previous generations, and affirm the pioneering role of science, technology, innovation and digital transformation in the cause of national development.

Speaking at the ceremony to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Post and Telecommunications sector and the 66th anniversary of the Science and Technology sector, Minister of Science and Technology Nguyen Manh Hung began his speech with words of gratitude to the revolutionary predecessors, those working in the postal, telecommunications, science and technology sectors throughout the ages who spared no effort, intelligence and blood to contribute to building science and technology, innovation and digital transformation in Vietnam today.

"80 years is a long enough journey for hardship to shape character, for sacrifice to turn into courage, for achievements to become pride. That is 80 years of pioneering, 80 years of serving the country, 80 years of accompanying the nation," the Minister shared. "Today's generation has the mission to continue that journey, with great aspirations, innovative thinking and a spirit of service. Not only mastering technology, but also creating technology, not only receiving knowledge, but also exploring new knowledge, not only building digital infrastructure, but also promoting digital transformation in all fields, to contribute to making Vietnam rise strongly in the digital and knowledge era."

He believes that the spirit of "competition is patriotism" has helped generations of postal and telecommunications, science and technology officials overcome hardships, turn poverty into creativity, maintain the bloodline of information and light the flame of knowledge. "The silent footsteps of liaison officers, the telegraph wires spliced together in hardship, the letters written hastily at night not only carried orders, but also carried the belief, will and desire for independence of the entire nation," he said.

He also mentioned the period after 1975, when the postal, telecommunications, science and technology infrastructure was severely damaged, power lines were broken, many post offices were left in ashes, research institutes were depleted of facilities, and the scientific staff was depleted after years of war. In that context, the entire industry embarked on the task of restoring and rebuilding the country with the spirit of "turning the impossible into possible."

In 1986, the 6th Party Congress initiated the Doi Moi process - a major historical milestone, opening the era of innovation and integration of the country, and also a turning point for the industry. Science and technology transformed Vietnam from a country with a lack of food into a country with self-sufficiency in food and a leading rice exporter in the world, building many large projects, such as the 500 KV North - South transmission line, self-elevating oil rigs at a depth of 120 m of water, building ships of over 100,000 tons, building cable-stayed bridges, highways, organ transplants and vaccine production, mastering telecommunications network technology, high-tech weapons, ranking 44th in the world on the global innovation index.

Regarding Posts and Telecommunications, Vietnam is a leader in digitizing telecommunications networks, launching satellites, opening the market, popularizing mobile, Internet and post and delivery services to the entire population, investing in telecommunications abroad, building digital infrastructure, developing the Make in Vietnam digital technology industry, implementing digital transformation, population database, and national digital identification through VNeID.

"After 80 years of journey, the organization may change to suit the requirements of the revolution in each period, but Post and Telecommunications, Science and Technology are still the guiding stars, as Uncle Ho taught: Information and communication are the nerves, the blood vessels of human beings, Science must come from production and must return to serve production, serve the masses".

On March 1, 2025, the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Information and Communications will merge into the Ministry of Science and Technology. According to the Minister, the 2025-2030 term is the first term of the merged Ministry, the first term to implement Resolution 57 of the Politburo on breakthroughs in science and technology development, innovation and national digital transformation; the first term to comprehensively innovate in postal services, telecommunications and science and technology.

This is also the first term in which the three strategies of science and technology, innovation and digital transformation are under one roof, taking on the mission of being the central driving force to realize Vietnam's aspiration to become a developed country with high income.

In that spirit, the Ministry of Science and Technology launched the first patriotic emulation movement of the industry in the new period, with a large and long-term orientation.

Firstly, develop a knowledge-based economy based on science and technology, innovation and digital data. Secondly, build technological autonomy in strategic areas in the spirit of Make in Vietnam, because not mastering technology means not being able to maintain national sovereignty. Thirdly, turn Vietnam into an innovation center of the ASEAN region, the continent and the world, becoming a start-up nation based on digital technology and innovation.

Fourth, build modern infrastructure and high-quality human resources for the Ministry's fields, including: science, technology, innovation, post and telecommunications, digital infrastructure, digital technology industry, digital transformation, intellectual property, standards - measurement - quality and nuclear energy, with special attention to artificial intelligence infrastructure, linked to digital sovereignty and Vietnam's digital position.

Fifth, science and technology, innovation and digital transformation must focus on solving the country's strategic problems, aiming at improving competitiveness, national governance, labor productivity, economic growth, ensuring national defense and security, and improving the quality of life of the people, contributing at least 50% to double-digit GDP growth. The connection of three parties: State - Institute - Enterprise, honoring scientists and entrepreneurs is the key to directing science and technology to solving practical problems.

Sixth, science and technology, innovation and digital transformation are not just the work of one ministry, not just the career of one industry, but the common career of the nation and the entire people.

The 80th anniversary of the Post and Telecommunications sector, the 66th anniversary of the Science and Technology sector and the 1st Patriotic Emulation Congress are not only occasions to express gratitude and pride for the past journey, but also an affirmation and commitment for the new journey. Today's generation carries the mission of continuing the glorious history with great aspirations, innovative thinking and a spirit of service./.
