Changes in Kim Bac

Following the winding small road, we went up the mountain slope to Kim Bac - a hamlet in a particularly difficult area of Muong Dong commune with 100% of the population being ethnic minorities. Before our eyes was the rich green of corn fields and sugarcane fields at the foot of the mountain. Some new crops tested on Kim Bac land such as peach trees, hemp trees, banana trees... began to flourish. Although there are still many difficulties and obstacles, a new life with many bright hopes is opening up for this highland.

Striving to rise

Kim Bac hamlet has 145 households with 555 people, of which Dao ethnic group accounts for 54%; Muong ethnic group 31%; Tay ethnic group 14%... People's lives mainly depend on agriculture with the main crops being corn and sugarcane. In recent years, with the propaganda and mobilization of the Party Committee and government of Muong Dong commune and Kim Bac hamlet, people have been proactive in economic development, strongly transforming crops and livestock.

Changes in Kim Bac

In the hamlet, the mixed garden renovation model is strongly developed with about 50 households growing peach trees.

In the field of cultivation, people have actively invested in intensive cultivation, proactively introduced varieties of high economic value and productivity into production; in addition to stabilizing the corn growing area, they have expanded the variety of crops. The total annual planting area reaches 220 hectares; the average food per capita reaches 510 kg. In recent years, the mixed garden renovation model has been strongly developed in the hamlet with about 50 households growing peaches; 15 households growing hemp; some households growing bananas...

Livestock continues to play an important role. The model of raising buffaloes, cows, pigs and poultry has developed with a total herd of more than 5,400 animals, contributing significantly to improving the income of the people in the hamlet. Forest management and protection is of concern with a total forestry land area of over 50 hectares. For many years, the hamlet has had no forest fires or illegal logging.

Comrade Dang Tuan Anh, Head of Kim Bac hamlet, said: In addition to the efforts of the people, as a particularly difficult hamlet, Kim Bac always receives the attention and care of the Party Committee and authorities at all levels. Currently, 100% of the people in the hamlet are issued Health Insurance cards. In the period of 2022 - 2025, Kim Bac particularly difficult hamlet has 01 student achieving excellent student at the provincial level and 03 students passing the university entrance exam; 04 children study at other vocational schools. Although going to school is far and difficult every day, 100% of school-age children go to school, the hamlet has no dropout phenomenon. The rate of households using the national grid is 100%, clean water is 98%; 87% of households have achieved the title of "Cultural Family". Infrastructure is invested in construction, the face of the countryside is gradually changing, and the spiritual life of the people is increasingly improved.

There are still many difficulties

Compared to 5 or 10 years ago, the lives of Kim Bac people have now improved a lot when temporary and dilapidated houses have been replaced by solid houses; dirt roads have been replaced by concrete roads, people's lives have gradually changed. However, Kim Bac is still a low-lying area in terms of economic development of Muong Dong commune as well as the old Hoa Binh area with an average income per capita of 34.6 million VND; the rate of poor and near-poor households is still up to 14%. The biggest challenge for Kim Bac is the orientation of appropriate and effective economic development.

The head of Kim Bac hamlet is concerned: Kim Bac has a cool, fresh climate, the land at the foot of the mountain, although not concentrated, is flat and fertile, very favorable for growing fruit trees and medicinal plants. But for a long time, the development of new crops has been spontaneous, with businesses coming to order planting and guaranteeing output; when businesses no longer purchase the products, the people are stuck. Kim Bac people have experienced "bitter" avocado crops when avocado trees were planted en masse with an area of up to about 10 hectares but then had no output so they were gradually cut down. Next are hectares of artichoke and sachi trees that people enthusiastically planted but sadly had to be destroyed because there was no output. So after many years of struggling, people have now returned to corn and sugarcane and are cautious when trying new crops. Livestock farming has also stopped at a small scale, not bringing high economic efficiency.

Changes in Kim Bac

Mr. Trieu Van Long's family is a poor household and has just received 40 million VND in support to demolish their dilapidated house.

In addition, in Kim Bac hamlet, there are still a number of households in extremely difficult circumstances, making it very difficult to escape poverty in the next few years. Recently, the hamlet has had 5 families supported to remove temporary and dilapidated houses, but there are still 10 households living in temporary houses. These are households without land, building temporary houses on the roadside, along streams, on agricultural land or not having the ability to pay for housing. Reality shows that along with the efforts and striving of the local people, Kim Bac is in great need of timely leadership and attention to solve current difficulties, especially to orient and support people to have appropriate and effective economic development directions; helping people to escape poverty, gradually get rich legitimately right in their homeland.
