Safety risks from 30-year-old classrooms in Quang Ngai

The 4-classroom building at the 2nd facility of Mo Duc Vocational Education - Continuing Education Center (Long Phung commune, Quang Ngai province) was built 30 years ago, but is now seriously degraded, posing potential safety risks and not ensuring conditions for implementing educational activities.

The Center's second facility has a total of 6 classrooms, divided into 2 rows. Of which, the row of 4 classrooms was built in 1995 and the row of 2 classrooms was built in 2019. Although it has been renovated and repaired, after a long time of use, the old row of 4 classrooms is still seriously damaged. Actual records show that the tiled roof is rotten, punctured, causing leaks; the purlins are rusty; the lime-sand brick walls are broken and jagged; the concrete pillars are cracked. Many cracks several centimeters wide appear on the walls, allowing rainwater to seep in, creating large patches of moss and mold.

Mr. Nguyen Ke Hau, Director of the Center, said that the deterioration has been going on for a long time. At the beginning of the 2025-2026 school year, 10th grade students were still arranged to study here. However, from September 24, 2025, after an on-site inspection and finding that this classroom building was seriously degraded, the Center decided to temporarily stop using it to ensure safety.

Vo Gia Bao, a 10th grade student, shared: At the beginning of the school year, we studied in the old, dilapidated classroom, but since September 24, our class has been moved to the new building. The new classroom is much cleaner, safer and more beautiful.

However, the temporary closure of the old classrooms has caused many difficulties for teaching and learning. Currently, the Center has only 11 staff and teachers but has to take charge of 15 classes at 2 facilities. Therefore, at facility 2, although there are only 4 classes, they have to be divided into shifts: 2 morning classes, 2 afternoon classes, causing overlapping of teacher arrangements. In addition, this facility does not have the necessary functional rooms, making students disadvantaged in studying and practicing.

Mr. Nguyen Ke Hau expressed: The Board of Directors hopes that the authorities will soon find a solution to rebuild a new, more spacious and modern building. Campus 2 serves students from Long Phung commune and part of Mo Cay commune. If it is not repaired, students will be forced to move to campus 1 to ensure safety, then many students will have to travel a distance of up to 25km, which is difficult and very tiring.

Discussing this issue, Director of the Department of Education and Training of Quang Ngai province Nguyen Ngoc Thai said that the Department has not yet received an official petition from the Mo Duc Vocational Education - Continuing Education Center but has obtained information about the facility's deterioration through the press and social networks. If the Center proposes, the Department will conduct a field inspection to synthesize, make a plan to submit to the Provincial People's Committee for consideration, allocate construction funds or have a plan to bring students to facility 1 to ensure safer and better quality teaching and learning.
