Although only over 500 words long, the letter contains a great vision of an independent, humane, liberal and integrated education ; at the same time, it arouses the national aspiration to reach out to the world.
Uncle Ho opened his letter with simple but proud words: "Today is the first school opening day of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam." After nearly a century of living under colonial rule, Vietnamese students were able to study for the first time in an independent country, with an education system completely for their people.
He emphasized that the new education system must "train students to become useful citizens for Vietnam" and at the same time help "fully develop the inherent abilities" of each student. This is a modern educational ideology, placing the learner at the center, promoting differences and comprehensive human development.
Uncle Ho's educational ideology does not stop at training individuals but expands to a vision for the community and the nation. That is also the orientation of modern education - not only teaching knowledge but also forming the ability to self-study, critical thinking, creativity and a sense of social responsibility.
Not only focusing on domestic education, Uncle Ho also clearly expressed his liberal and integrationist ideology. He especially encouraged learning foreign languages, accessing advanced science and technology, and broadening one's vision to the world. This is the guiding principle for Vietnamese education today: preserving identity but always ready to absorb the quintessence of humanity.
In particular, Uncle Ho's advice in the letter became a timeless call: "Whether Vietnam's mountains and rivers become beautiful or not, whether the Vietnamese people can step up to the stage of glory and stand shoulder to shoulder with the great powers of the five continents or not, depends largely on your studies."
It is not only an encouragement but also a message of great expectation for the young generation. That advice has become a guiding principle for generations of Vietnamese students, fostering the will to study, to rise up and to contribute to the country.
From simple classrooms during the resistance war to modern lecture halls today, Vietnamese students have gradually realized Uncle Ho's aspirations through concrete actions and results.
After nearly 40 years of renovation, Vietnam has achieved remarkable achievements. GDP has exceeded 506 billion USD, nearly 20 times higher than in 1986, ranking 33rd in the world . In the fields of science and education, many Vietnamese scientists are internationally recognized. Vietnamese students have continuously achieved high results at international Olympics, appearing in the top 10 of many subjects. These achievements affirm the intellectual potential and global competitiveness of the young generation of Vietnam.
However, education is not only aimed at intellectual development, but also at shaping personality, nurturing social responsibility, great ambition and the courage to integrate. In the era of globalization, digital transformation and artificial intelligence, Vietnam needs global citizens who are both professionally competent, culturally knowledgeable, independent, creative and have a spirit of service.
A nation is only truly strong when it can awaken the aspirations and knowledge in each generation. And now, the aspiration to "stand shoulder to shoulder with the world powers" is gradually being realized through persistent efforts in each class, each person, and each innovation policy.
From education to national development strategy, every effort today is the way for today's generation to continue that sacred wish. The nation's journey of development is being strengthened, starting from the 14th Party Congress in 2026. The vision of Vietnam becoming a developed, high-income, happy and civilized country by 2045, capable of standing shoulder to shoulder with the five continents, is gradually becoming a reality.
