To ensure the overall progress of the Quang Ngai - Hoai Nhon expressway in the context of the prolonged rainy season, the contractor has flexibly coordinated construction activities from the roadbed to the construction of bridges, culverts, and tunnels.
Flexibly transfer road construction to bridges and culverts
According to the reporter's records, along the main route of the project from the Da Nang - Quang Ngai expressway intersection to the end of Quang Ngai province, the construction site atmosphere is quiet. Most of the construction sites are focusing on bridge and culvert items.
Contractors focus on building bridges and culverts to increase production amid heavy rain.
At the overpass on provincial road 623B (Nghia Ky commune, Tu Nghia), due to heavy rain, the roadbed could not be filled with earth, so the contractor focused on installing iron to construct the bridge abutment.
The construction team representative said that the rainy season makes the construction difficult, the mud is slimy and cold, which affects the overall progress. We are working hard to complete the ironwork to pour the concrete for the beam cap.
At the XL1 package, personnel are allocated to focus on bridges and culverts, however, the basic works have been completed, the construction site is no longer as bustling as on a sunny day.
At Ve River Bridge, the largest bridge on the route, the concrete deck has been completed and the contractor is installing formwork to construct the bridge railing.
According to the project management board, due to the rain, the earthwork at both ends of the bridge abutments has not been completed, the contractor is focusing on constructing the railing items and completing the bridge deck.
“If the weather is favorable, we can now travel directly back and forth between the North and South banks, and the vehicles transporting materials will not have to take a detour. However, the unfavorable weather has made progress difficult. It is certain that there will be rain in the remaining time of 2024, so we will focus on constructing the bridge and culvert sections, ensuring an increase in the overall output of the project,” said a representative of the Song Ve Bridge Management Board.
Heavy rains over the past several months have seriously affected the progress of the Quang Ngai – Hoai Nhon expressway project.
At the XL2 package, the construction site is also in a similar situation. The contractors' equipment and locomotives are "resting", instead focusing on constructing large bridges such as the Tra Cau River Bridge and overpasses over residential roads.
At the Km42 intersection, passing through Pho Ninh commune, Duc Pho town, the contractor is focusing on completing the overpass abutment. Along the project site, the construction teams for the iron section and the concrete pouring of the bridge girder are still actively working in the cold rain.
A representative of the Deo Ca contractor said that in the context of the rainy season, the unit flexibly deployed construction teams. The team of officers, engineers, and workers on the construction site are still being mobilized to the maximum to complete the set goals.
In particular, the focus is on constructing bridges and culverts, completing related items such as pouring concrete on the roof, planting grass and completing the slopes on both sides of completed bridges to prevent landslides. In particular, the construction of traffic safety items is ready for installation when the conditions are met.
Speeding up construction of tunnel number 3
In addition to being flexible in arranging construction sites along the route, for many months now, Deo Ca contractor has coordinated with Project Management Board 2 to develop a plan to speed up the tunneling project.
Tunnel drilling and production increase work is being carried out by Deo Ca contractor with many construction teams.
Most of the equipment and personnel serving the construction of tunnel No. 3 were mobilized to the construction site, assigned to each task to ensure flexibility in construction organization to increase project output.
At the tunnel on the left side of the North tunnel entrance of tunnel No. 3, construction work is carried out 24/7, tunnel drilling teams, explosive installation teams and rock clearing teams are mobilized and arranged in a reasonable manner. It is noted that after the blasting team completes the explosive loading and detonation work, the rock clearing team immediately takes over the construction site. Mechanical equipment such as excavators and loaders are collected and loaded onto trucks to be transported to the storage yard.
At the same time, the team installing formwork and arranging steel to reinforce the tunnel arch for concrete spraying is also rushing to construct.
According to engineer Hoang Dinh Thinh, head of the North Steering Committee of Tunnel No. 3, the unit has mobilized more human resources and 50 motor vehicles to meet the Government 's target. Up to now, Tunnel No. 3 has dug nearly 2,200/3,200m. At the same time, 1,000m of tunnel lining has been poured concrete.
In addition to focusing on tunnel excavation, the contractor also focuses on completing the tunnel entrance slope, planting grass, installing electrical, water and fire protection systems, etc.
The contractor representative said that the construction output of the Northern tunnel is more than 471 billion VND, the Southern tunnel is more than 757 billion VND. The cumulative construction output of the entire project to date is nearly 6,800/13,468 billion VND, reaching more than 50% of the value.
In parallel, the contractor will withdraw the construction work to complete the slope when the rain stops.
“To complete 3,000km of expressway in 500 days and nights, despite the rainy season, the contractor still mobilized nearly 4,200 personnel and 1,700 machines and equipment, working in “3 shifts” on the entire route.
In particular, the project progress is required to be urgent, especially tunnel No. 3 must be opened by April 30, 2025 and the project must be completed in 2025 as launched by the Prime Minister. The contractor flexibly organizes the construction, spraying concrete mortar, installing waterproofing and reinforcing the tunnel shell as soon as the tunnel is dug. We are making efforts to ensure the proposed plans," said the contractor's representative.
The representative of Project Management Board 2 said that in general, the project progress basically meets the requirements. Construction supervision is strictly controlled in both progress and quality.
Equipment installation work is carried out by the contractor along with construction of other items.
The unit is currently re-evaluating the entire project, delving into each bid package to find effective solutions. This includes cutting and transferring subcontractors that are not meeting the schedule to other contractors.
Quang Ngai – Hoai Nhon Expressway is one of 12 component projects of the North-South Expressway that started construction in early 2023. This is the project with the largest investment capital of more than 20,400 billion VND, stretching across two provinces, Quang Ngai and Binh Dinh, with a length of 88km.
To date, the project has reached about 6,800 billion VND out of a total of more than 13.4 trillion VND in construction and installation capital. In 2024 alone, the capital plan for the construction and installation project is more than 4,000 billion VND, and to date, about 3,000 billion VND has been disbursed, reaching about 71% of the plan.
