Ho Chi Minh City organizes the first exam to select excellent high school students after the merger.

On the morning of September 17, more than 3,300 high school students in Ho Chi Minh City entered the exam to select the excellent high school student team for the 2025-2026 school year. This is the first exam held after the administrative boundary merger, with the participation of candidates from all three regions: the old Ho Chi Minh City, the old Binh Duong and the old Ba Ria - Vung Tau.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, the total number of candidates taking the exam is 3,303, registered in 12 subjects: Literature, history, geography, math, physics, chemistry, biology, information technology, English, French, Chinese, Japanese. Of which, English has the largest number of candidates with 779 students, followed by Literature with 481 students; the least are French (68 students) and Japanese (79 students).

The test sites are located in 3 areas: Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted and Marie Curie High School (area 1); Hung Vuong High School for the Gifted, Binh Duong (area 2); Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted, Ba Ria - Vung Tau (area 3). Students take the test in 180 minutes, with the test questions being within the general education program and advanced content. Foreign languages ​​have an additional listening test, and computer science tests are on computer programming using C++, Pascal and Python.

Contestants are students in grades 10, 11, and 12 in the 2025-2026 school year who have good or better academic and training results in the previous school year. Specialized schools and schools with specialized classes must send at least 50% of their specialized class students to take the exam in specialized subjects; non-specialized high schools can send a maximum of 5 students per subject. For region 2, students who have passed the selection round since February 2025 organized by the former Binh Duong Department of Education and Training will take part.

The exam aims to select outstanding students to form the Ho Chi Minh City team to participate in the national excellent student exam for the 2025-2026 school year. Students who pass the first round will be trained and participate in the second round; the results of the second round will determine the official team of the city. Grade 12 students selected for the official team will also be recognized as winners of the first prize in the city-level excellent student exam for the 2025-2026 school year.
