The State Council of Professors has just announced a list of 933 candidates proposed by the Basic Council of Professors to be considered for recognition as meeting the standards for the title of professor and associate professor in 26 fields/interdisciplinary fields in 2025.
Candidates 'five yes, five no'
According to Tuoi Tre Online , from 2019 up to now, literature candidates proposed by the basic professor council to be considered for recognition of meeting the standards for the title of professor or associate professor have been in a "dismal" situation, "some years yes, some years no".
Specifically, in 2019, the Literature Professor Council had 7 candidates (1 professor candidate, 6 associate professor candidates), but 3 associate professor candidates failed after review.
In 2020, the number of associate professor candidates dropped to 2, and in 2021 there were no candidates. In 2022 there were 3 associate professor candidates, in 2023 there were 5 associate professor candidates, and in 2024 there were no candidates. In 2025 there was only one associate professor candidate.
This year, in addition to the literature professor council that has no candidates for consideration for professorship, there are 7 other major/interdisciplinary professor councils, including: agriculture - forestry, law, culture - art - physical education and sports, linguistics, mechanics, irrigation, history - archaeology - ethnology/anthropology, literature.
The number of candidates in the professorships of mechanics, metallurgy, history - archaeology - ethnology/anthropology from 2019 to present is also low compared to other councils.
Economy continues to lead
Meanwhile, the Council of Professors of Economics has continuously fluctuated strongly in number. In 2019, there were only 42 candidates (7 professor candidates, 35 associate professor candidates), but in 2020 there were 68 candidates (14 professor candidates, 54 associate professor candidates), an increase of 61.9%.
By 2023 and 2024, this number will increase to 102 and 108 candidates, peaking this year at 153 candidates (an increase of more than 41.67% compared to last year and an increase of 261.9% compared to 2019).
The medical sector in the period 2019 - 2022 has a fairly stable total number of professor and associate professor candidates, ranging from 47 - 57 candidates. By 2023 and 2024, the total number of candidates will be 82 (an increase of 57.7% compared to 2022).
This year, the total number of medical candidates continued to increase to 124 (15 professor candidates, 109 associate professor candidates), an increase of 51.22% compared to last year and an increase of 163.38% compared to 2019.
Why do economics candidates consistently come out on top?
Speaking with Tuoi Tre Online , Professor Pham Hong Chuong - Chairman of the Economics Professor Council in 2025 - commented that the number of professor and associate professor candidates in economics continuously leading and increasing over the years is a positive and inevitable trend.
In particular, with objective factors, he said that since the renovation, Vietnam's economy has developed rapidly, with a high growth rate. Currently, the country has nearly 1 million enterprises, the target to strive for in the future is 2 million enterprises.
According to him, contributing to the country's economic development, a workforce with qualifications and a foundation of economic knowledge is very important and increasingly numerous. The need to learn and understand economics, management, and business administration is increasing.
Of the more than 200 universities in Vietnam, more than half offer training in economics, management, and business administration. Correspondingly, the number of staff and lecturers teaching in this field is also among the largest, estimated at 10-15%.
Subjectively, Mr. Chuong believes that this is the result of the efforts of the team of economics lecturers in universities in Vietnam.
The number of students increases, the number of lecturers obviously increases; the number of lecturers increases, the number of people with the need, capacity, and desire to become professors and associate professors obviously increases.
In addition, Decision No. 37 stipulates the standards for recognizing the titles of professor and associate professor, in which, candidates to be considered for associate professor must be the main author of at least 3 scientific articles, for professors at least 5 scientific articles and other related requirements.
He believes that with the above regulations, cadres and lecturers in the fields of economics and business, especially young people, can access the program very quickly; while older candidates need time to adjust and prepare.
"Among the approximately 10 Vietnamese journals listed in the Scopus index, there are two journals from the two largest economic universities in Vietnam, the National Economics University and the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City, accounting for about one-fifth of the number of recognized journals in all fields in Vietnam.
This proves that the ability of the economics teaching staff to access the common knowledge of humanity in this field is quite good and noteworthy," said Mr. Chuong.
Mr. Chuong added that through reviewing the profiles of this year's professor and associate professor candidates in economics, most of the candidates are under 40 years old, many of whom have dozens of scientific articles published in prestigious international journals; the quality of candidates is getting better and better.
Regarding some professor councils with low candidate rates and lasting for many years, Mr. Chuong said that the reason is partly because social demand is not high, few students lead to a gradual decrease in the number of lecturers, even though these are very important fields for society.
According to him, there should be special policies to promote students and workers in these fields. When there are appropriate policies, even though the number of candidates may not be many, there will still be scientists with enough passion and capacity to develop the economy and society.
