First successful emergency laparoscopic surgery in Con Dao

(Dan Tri) - A fisherman at the Con Dao Military-Civilian Medical Center had a successful laparoscopic emergency appendectomy. This is also the first case of successful laparoscopic surgery here.

On the afternoon of September 6, information from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health said that the emergency laparoscopic surgery for a fisherman with acute appendicitis went well at the Con Dao Military-Civilian Medical Center, with the support of a team of surgeons from Binh Dan Hospital.

The surgery took place just three days after a team of specialized doctors from Ho Chi Minh City began working on a rotational basis here, marking an important milestone in efforts to improve the quality of healthcare in the remote island region.

Previously, fisherman TVD. (36 years old, from Khanh Hoa ), had a dull pain in the epigastric region, localized in the right iliac fossa, accompanied by a mild fever and vomiting while on a fishing boat at sea, about 50 nautical miles from the island. He was taken to Con Dao for examination and transferred to the Con Dao Military-Civilian Medical Center for treatment.

Here, through initial examination, doctors noted that the patient had a fever and pain in the right iliac fossa. Ultrasound images showed that the appendix was inflamed, with fluid in the lumen and “fingerprints”. Blood tests showed an increase in white blood cells.

Immediately, the special team of doctors in Con Dao had a remote consultation with Associate Professor, Doctor, Doctor Tran Vinh Hung, Director of Binh Dan Hospital and general surgeons at this unit. Through the consultation, the doctors diagnosed that the patient had acute appendicitis and needed emergency surgery.

Immediately afterwards, a team of surgeons from Binh Dan Hospital, including Dr. Ly Bao Duy (General Surgery) and Dr. Van Phuoc Toan (Anesthesiology and Resuscitation) and on-site doctors performed the surgery.

With the newly equipped modern operating room system, including laparoscopy, CO2 gas and standard instruments, the surgery lasted nearly 1 hour and was completed successfully. The patient recovered smoothly, is in stable health and is expected to be discharged in the next few days.

Sharing more, patient D. said that if there were no doctors working in Con Dao on a rotation basis, his journey to the emergency room and treatment would have taken much longer.

"I might have to take a boat to Can Tho (formerly Soc Trang area), then go by road to the hospital. The long, time-consuming journey could cause more danger while traveling. If the weather is stormy, emergency treatment is almost impossible," he compared.

For the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, this surgery is one of the first concrete results of the rotating team of specialist doctors working in Con Dao Special Zone.

"The Department respectfully acknowledges and appreciates the efforts of the doctors and nurses during the first days of rotating work in Con Dao," the agency said.

Previously, on the morning of September 3, a group of specialized doctors from the Ho Chi Minh City Health Department, who took turns working at the Con Dao Military-Civilian Medical Center, began their first working day there.

The delegation included 7 doctors from 6 leading hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City, including Binh Dan Hospital, Nhan Dan Gia Dinh Hospital, Hung Vuong Hospital, Nhi Dong 1 Hospital, Orthopedics and Nguyen Tri Phuong Hospital.

According to the recorded work diary, on the first day of receiving the mission, the doctors handed over, instructed on the installation, and prepared the infrastructure and equipment system at the Con Dao Military-Civilian Medical Center. The delegation also began preliminary examinations of common diseases for the local people.
