The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health has just announced the official names of 38 regional medical centers, marking an important step in streamlining the apparatus, improving operational efficiency and bringing medical services closer to the people.
These centers were converted from the former district and Thu Duc City medical centers, according to the policy of the City Party Committee and People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City.
Before the merger, Ho Chi Minh City had 22 medical centers, Binh Duong province had 9 and Ba Ria - Vung Tau province had 7 centers. After the reorganization, 38 new regional medical centers were formed.
Notably, Nhieu Loc, Cho Lon, Hoa Hung and Can Gio centers will be converted to a model without inpatient beds. Inpatient treatment functions will be transferred to general and specialized hospitals, in order to reduce the load and improve the quality of medical examination and treatment at these facilities.
Along with that, 443 commune, ward and special zone health stations were also rearranged into 168 health stations, linked with 296 affiliated health points, creating a tighter and more effective grassroots health network.

Previously, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health held a ceremony to award decisions to appoint directors and deputy directors to 38 regional medical centers, affirming its determination to improve the quality of primary health care, helping people easily access primary health care services.
To ensure effective operation, the Department of Health has directed the review and handover of facilities and equipment; provided guidance on carving and registering new seals; and developed regulations on functions, tasks and organizational structure. The centers are also required to develop job position projects and plans for recruiting new human resources.
The Ho Chi Minh City health sector aims to standardize primary health care services, attract people to health stations for health check-ups and monitoring, and expand preventive health services and chronic disease management in the community.
From 2026, according to Resolution 72-NQ/TW of the Politburo , people will receive periodic health check-ups or free screening at least once a year, moving towards a healthcare model that proactively prevents and detects diseases early.
In addition, the Department also strengthens human resource training, organizes flexible health check-ups and continues to develop end-line hospitals in a specialized, high-quality direction, making Ho Chi Minh City a medical center of the ASEAN region.
